8A | OCTOBER 22, 2020 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL CG to begin Local Foods, Local Places workshop The City of Cottage Grove invites the commu- nity to participate in its Local Foods, Local Places Workshop being held vir- tually Nov. 5 and 6. Cottage Grove was one of 16 communities select- ed from across the nation by the U.S. Environmen-tal Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture under the Local Foods, Local Places program in 2020 to help re- vitalize Main Street and the surrounding community through food systems and place-making initiatives. Registration for the up- coming workshop is free and will be a two-day brainstorming session, leading to a plan of action for better integrating local foods systems into Cottage Grove’s economic recovery. The city is asking farm- ers, producers, growers, restaurant owners, entre- preneurs, business own- ers, tourist organizations, non-profits, local govern- ment officials, etc. — any- one who has a stake in thenlocal food system’s fu- ture — to help. With an overarching theme of building a resil- ient local/regional food system, four topics have been identified by the Local Food, Local Places steering committee: • Identify strategies to support and enhance ex- isting commercial kitchen and food incubator spaces. • Improve food security and public health in Cot- tage Grove. • Increase the involve- ment of Cottage Grove’s underrepresented/immi- grant populations (e.g. youth, BIPOC represen- tatives) in local food and place-making initiatives. • Build stronger sup- ply chain connections for farmers and food produc- ers with both local and re- gional markets. There will be time in the sessions to discuss and re- fine the topics if necessary. ‘Participants will brain- storm potential actions or next steps necessary to ad- vance each goal and there will be breakout rooms to detail the actions selected by participants as highest priority for each goal. The workshop will con- sist of a series of seven vir- tual sessions leading up to the completion of a draft community action plan framed around the com- munity goals for this tech- nical assistance process. Statewide, the metrics must hold at a test pos- itivity rate of 5 percent or less in the preceding seven days, also for three weeks. So far, Oregon has not yet met the stan- dard. For the week of Oct. 11-17, Oregon Health Authority (OHA) reported Oregon’s cases per 100,000 at 54.4 and test positivity at 5.8 per- cent. Furthermore, Lane County has seen a steep rise in the number of cases. For the week starting Oct. 11, OHA reported the county as having 77.6 cases per 100,000 and a 8.2 percent posi- tivity in testing. The trend seems to be reflected locally as well. Lane County Public Health data on Wednes- day listed COVID-19 cases as having risen to 65 in ZIP code 97424 and 29 cases in ZIP code 97426. The school district did not reply to a request for comment on this sto- ry. SLSD officials have previously stated they could not speculate yet on what a new timeline might look like.
