COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL | SEPTEMBER 3, 2020 Uninsured Oregonians may use COVID-19 emergency to enroll in health coverage Uninsured Orego- nians who were not able to sign up for private health coverage due to COVID-19 can still en- roll. HealthCare.gov has made it easier for un- insured consumers to enroll in coverage through its existing na- tional emergency or major disaster excep- tional circumstances special enrollment peri- od (SEP), also known as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) SEP. People who experi- enced a life change are eligible for a standard special enrollment pe- riod that allows them to sign up for a plan 60 days before or 60 days after their life change to enroll in a plan. Examples of a life change include loss of coverage due to loss of employment, marriage, addition of a new family member, gaining lawful immigration status, and moving homes. Oregonians who were eligible for a standard special enrollment peri- od, but missed this win- dow due to COVID-19, can use the FEMA SEP to enroll in a plan. They would need to submit proof of their life change and do not need to submit proof that they have been affected by COVID-19. Applications are being accepted at HealthCare. gov if the life change is a loss in coverage and at 800-318-2596 (toll-free) for all other life changes. The FEMA SEP for private health cover- age is available for peo- ple who qualified for a special enrollment pe- riod from Jan. 1, 2020, through up to 60 days after the national public health emergency has ended. The current national declaration is set to end in late October. The district encourages families to use their com- puter or tablet for distance learning, or to purchase one if possible. The district’s technology department has published guidelines to help determine which de- vice to purchase or to help determine if a device is suf- ficient for learning. For those who do not have a device, or are un- able to purchase one, South Lane School District will check out a Chromebook computer for children to use during distance, hybrid and SoLO (online) learn- ing. Many of the district’s families checked out a Chromebook in April, and those devices can be used this year as well. If in need of a device, one can be picked up at the child’s school beginning the week of Sept. 8. The pick-up schedule for each school follows: Al Kennedy High School — Sept. 8-11 (times not provided as of press dead- line) • Bohemia Elementary — Sept. 8-11, (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.), Sept. 9-10 (5 to 7:30 p.m.) • Cottage Grove High School — Sept. 8-10, (9 a.m. to noon, and 5 to 7 p.m.) • Dorena School — Sept. 8-11, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call for other times.) • Harrison Elementary — Sept. 8-11, (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.), Sept. 9-10 (5 to 7:30 p.m.) • Lincoln Middle School — Sept. 8-10 (9 a.m. to noon), Sept. 9-10 (5 to 7 p.m.) • London School — Sept. 8-11, (8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call for other times) South Lane School Dis- trict encourages families to use existing internet ser- vices for learning this fall (broadband, satellite, cel- lular hotspot, etc.). While broadband internet service will provide the most ro- bust service, it is under- stood that all families do not have access to this ser- vice and the other listed services may suffice. For families who live within the service area of local broadband providers (CenturyLink, Spectrum, Douglas Fast Net), financial assistance is provided by those providers for families who qualify. If unable to access broad- band internet services or personal cellular hotspot services, the school district will have a limited number of cellular hotspots with service available for fami- lies. These devices can be re- quested at the Chromebook distribution. Students in comprehen- sive distance learning or hybrid learning that don’t have access to the internet will be scheduled to come into their school and access their learning by using a district computer and in- ternet. These students will not need to check out a Chromebook computer. Contact your child’s school of attendance if the child will need to access a computer at the school. Safe Routes to School, Fillmore Project update This week, Wildish crews are pouring catch basins on South Fourth Street between Grant Av- enue and Fillmore Ave- nue as well as preparing the road for placement of curb. Crews also prepared an area to be paved behind the bus barn. An additional crew is laying a 10-inch sanitary sewer main installation on South Fourth Street from Taylor Avenue to Fillmore Avenue. The company antici- pates having it completed and tested by the end of the week. Upon passing the test- ing requirements, crews will be crossing residents in this area over from the old sanitary sewer main to the new main. Also, a Wildish crew has SOUTH LANE COUNTY FIRE & RESCUE laid curb and gutter. The west side of South Fourth Street from Fill- more Avenue to Grant Av- enue was laid on Sept. 1. On Wednesday, Sept. 2, curb and gutter was poured on the east side of the street. Residents are being asked to get their vehicles out of their driveways and park on the streets or the school parking lots. They are also being asked to not go over the curb for five days to allow the concrete to cure to the proper strength. Wildish will provide a method for residents to park in their driveways at the end of the five days.
