In operation since 1956, the Cottage Grove Speedway will enter its 65th year of operation under new, but familiar owner- ship. In early February, current speedway general manag- er Heather Boyce finalized a deal with previous owner Jerry Schram to take over ownership of the beloved local institution. With the future of the speed- way now set and under local control, racing fans can breathe a sigh of relief that spring and summer nights in the Grove won’t quiet any time soon. “It is nice having it back with a local owner, somebody that’s here,” said Boyce, who Schram hired as general manager in 2013 and has leased the facil- ity from Schram since 2016. Her existing role and familiar- ity with the venue played a big role in her decision to purchase it outright. “It just made sense to have this be the next step and pur- chase it and kind of be able to make it my own,” Boyce said. The Rivers are low and clear now, so anglers will need to adapt their tactics to find success. • Anglers have been catching fish every day on the Alsea, Siletz and Siuslaw. Water conditions are low, but fishable, and should remain so the rest if this week and into the weekend. • Anglers have been catching lingcod while fishing along the jetty in Coos Bay. • Excess hatchery steelhead from the Eel Lake fish trap have been planted in Butterfield and Saunders lakes. • Anglers willing to hike in below Graves Creek on the middle Rogue report that there are fish holding in the Canyon. Boat and bankies are picking up winter steelhead in the Galice Area more regularly. • With dry weather in the forecast, fishing conditions on Quartzville Creek should be much improved by the weekend. • It’s a busy week for trout stocking in the mid and southern Willamette Valley, with the follow- ing waterbodies on the schedule: Junction City Pond, Walling Pond, Cottage Grove Reservoir, Dexter Reservoir, Cottage Grove Pond, St. Louis Ponds, Walter Wirth Lake and Alton Baker Canoe Canal. • Anglers from the south coast reported good catches of lingcod several days last week. Limits of rockfish were caught as well. • Central coast crabbing has been fair to moderate with weeks of improved weather and lower rainfall. COTTAGE GROVE POND (ROW RIVER NATURE PARK POND): trout, warmwater species Will be stocked again this week with 2,000 legal-size rainbow trout. DEXTER RESERVOIR: trout Will be stocked this week with 2,000 large, 1 pound, rainbow trout. Dexter Reservoir near Lowell is visible from Hwy. 58. Boat and bank access is available from state and county parks. Parking and bank access are also available from the causeway near Lowell. Large- mouth bass and some smallmouth are also available to anglers in this reservoir. DORENA RESERVOIR: trout, warmwater Was last stocked the week of Feb. 3 with 2,540 trophy-size rainbow trout. By Nick Snyder nsnyder@cgsentinel.com When asked about their goals before the start of the 2019-20 season, it was a uniform refrain from the members of the North Douglas girls’ basketball team: “Get to Baker.” On Friday, Feb. 28 that goal became reality when the sixth- ranked Warriors (11-0 league, 23-3 overall) took down visit- ing 14th-ranked Powder Valley (9-2, 15-11) by a final score of 34-23 in the first round of the OSAA 1A state playoffs. With the win, North Douglas punched their ticket to the state quarterfinals, to be held this weekend in Baker, Ore., where they will play third-ranked Per- rydale in a rematch from an earlier game this season. While the Pirates won that game 44- 40, Warriors’ head coach Jody Cyr is looking forward to the prospect of getting another shot at one of the top teams in the state. “I’m super excited about that,” Cyr said. “I’ve talked to their coach a lot this year and developed a pretty good rela- tionship with him and it’s kinda what we both wanted … but we shall see.” Before round two against Perrydale was set, however, the Warriors first needed to get through a sizable obstacle in Powder Valley, the runners-up in last year’s state championship game. The Badgers boast a roster of five players over 5 feet 10 See WARRIORS 4B CGHS’ Herzog wins title, Dunn second at state championships By Nick Snyder nsnyder@cgsentinel.com Between both boys and girls, the Cottage Grove High School (CGHS) wrestling team qualified seven wrestlers for last weekend’s OSAA State Championships. At the end of two days of competition, two Lions were still standing and took their place on the podium. The tournament was held last Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-29 at the Veterans Memo- rial Coliseum in Portland and the Lions’ performance was highlighted by a second consecutive state title for junior Raina Her- Athlete of the Week zog in the 235-pound division and a sec- ond place finish for senior Justin Dunn in the boys’ 152-pound class. OSAA didn’t hold a girls’ state champi- onship tournament until the 2018-19 sea- son, but two years in and, at 235 pounds, Oregon has seen only one champion: Her- zog. Last year in a four-wrestler bracket, she only needed to win two matches on her way to the title, but evidencing the growth of the sport, Herzog needed three wins this year as the girls’ bracket for each weight class grew to eight.
