2A | THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2020 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL On The Record Police make arrest in attempted robbery at local Dairy Queen On Sunday, Feb. 16, the Cottage Grove Police Department received a report of a robbery in progress at a local Dairy Queen restaurant, 714 Highway 99, at approxi- mately 8:30 p.m. While officers were re- sponding, they were ad- vised that the suspect was wearing a mask and was armed with a gun. Officers arrived to find a Dairy Queen employ- ee engaged in a physical fight with the suspect, who was later identified as Ryan Stephen Howard. Two other employees had fled the building af- ter the robber confronted staff. Officers fought with the suspect briefly before taking him into custody. Howard was transport- ed to the Cottage Grove Police Department and then to the Lane County Jail. Howard was charged with Robbery in the Sec- ond Degree; Burglary in the Second Degree; As- sault 4; Menacing; Re- sisting Arrest; Interfering with Police; and Harass- ment. This case (No. 2020- 0370) was still under investigation as of press time and more infor- mation will be released at the conclusion of the CGPD’s investigation. City of Cottage Grove to host first of three tree giveaways this Saturday Cottage Grove Mayor Jeffrey Gowing and the Urban Forestry Commit- tee invite residents of the City of Cottage Grove to attend one of three tree giveaways being held Feb. 22, 29 and March 7. Attendees can receive a free tree to be given to area residents to replace those that were damaged during the “Great Snow- mageddon” of 2019 — or to those who just want a new tree. The giveaway will take place each time at Coin- POLICE LOG Feb. 7 • A 1994 Honda Accord was stolen from North Douglas Avenue. • An assault occurred at the Grove Tavern. • During patrol of Trail Head Park, a CGPD officer observed a trash can fully engulfed in flames and uti- lized a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. No suspect information was acquired. • Five individuals were contacted by an officer in the bathroom of Coiner Park after hours. Litter was thrown around the bath- room and one male ap- peared under the influence of an intoxicant. The indi- viduals were instructed to clean the bathroom and ju- veniles were later released to adults. Feb. 9 • Bike theft was reported at Gateway Boulevard. • Theft of $67.90-worth of merchandise was report- ed stolen from Walmart. at a gas station on High- way 99 who claimed to be “Donald Trump” in “Chi- na” and was concerned for her own safety. Judy was born June 18, 1945 to parents Wallace and Ann (Kauppila) Calkins in Worcester, MA. She graduated from West Covina High School in California. Judy worked in City of Industry, CA for Revland Electric for many years before moving to Cottage Grove, OR where she owned and operated an insurance of- fi ce before retiring. Judy loved to cook, camping, ATV riding, boating, and spending time with her children and grand- children. She was a member of the Dorena Grange. Judy is sur- vived by her life long partner Jay Williamson, of Eugene, OR; son Kevin (Melody) DuPay of Cottage Grove, OR; daughter Heidi Hausmann of Tacoma, WA; step daughter Kristina (Oscar) Gallegos of Creswell, OR; brother Ron (Donnie) Calkins of Upland, CA; sister Carol (Joseph) Scatamacchia of Whittier, CA; brother Bob Calkins of Covina, CA; and 12 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her mother, a son Th omas DuPay, and broth- er Russell Calkins. A funeral was held February 14, 2020 at 1:00 PM at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. Interment at Fir Grove Cemetery, Cottage Grove, OR. Janice (Jan) Howard 87, of Creswell, OR passed away Feb- ruary 11, 2020. Janice was born November 25, 1932 to Gene Lindgren and Mildred (Jackson) Kangas in Long Beach, CA. Janice married David How- ard on November 15, 1952 in Cottage Grove, OR. Janice enjoyed camping, fi shing, hiking, rock hounding and walking on the beach. Janice was a member of the Creswell Congregation of Jeho- vah’s Witnesses. Janice is survived by her daughters Teresa (Rob) Vaughn of Creswell, OR; Kim (Darren) Painter of Lake Os- wego, OR; Kat Rose of Port- land, OR and Lisa (Ryan) Gaugenmaier of Dorena, OR; sister, Lisa Lindgren and broth- er, Pete Lindgren of Califor- nia; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Janice was preceded in death by her husband David Howard; sister, Adele Benson and broth- er, Ted Kangas. A memorial will be held at the Kingdom Hall in Cottage Grove on February 22nd at 2pm. Richard (Rick) Dale Chapman 1958-2020 Richard (Rick) Dale Chap- man of Dorena, OR passed away on February 6, 2020 at the age of 61. Rick was born on March 29, 1958 in Cottage Grove, OR to parents Richard Otis Chapman and Francis Joan (Crawford) Brown. He worked as a logger but was known as the ultimate volun- teer by his friends and family. Rick was a generous and kind- hearted soul, always willing to help shuttle people to and from doctors’ appointments or any- where they needed to go. He volunteered at the community center, the community sharing food bank, at the VFW to cook dinner every Friday night, as well as at the soup kitchen every Sunday. Rick loved to garden and cook, and was also an avid swimmer; oft en taking part in water aerobics. Rick is survived by his sisters Sebrena Cargill of Gresham, OR and Lori Adeniji of Eugene, OR; and his brothers Lyle Chapman of Cottage Grove, OR, Mat- thew Ramp of Vancouver, WA, and Joe Ramp of Springfi eld, OR.
