2A | FEBRUARY 13, 2020 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL On The Record Parents: Get immunizations updated before Feb. 19 Parents must provide schools and childcare fa- cilities with kids’ vaccine records Feb. 19 is School Exclu- sion Day, and the Oregon Immunization Program is reminding parents that children will not be able to attend school or childcare starting that day if their re- cords on file show missing immunizations. Under state law, all chil- dren in public and private schools, preschools, Head Start and certified child- care facilities must have up-to-date documentation on their immunizations or have an exemption. “Immunization is the best way to protect children against vaccine-preventable POLICE LOG Jan. 29 • An illegal backyard burn was reported on East Jefferson Avenue. They were wed in the Lutheran Church in Choteau, Mont. Having lived several places in Montana, includ- ing Shelby and Bozeman, they have resided in Cot- tage Grove since 2005. They have one daughter, Carla, and her husband, Lloyd Williams, of Cottage Grove. Before retiring, Ron worked in the grain indus- try and Arlene was a book- keeper for several busi- nesses. After retirement, they spent over 20 years spending winters at the Fountain of Youth RV Park in southern California. On Valentine’s Day, they will have dinner out with family and friends and lat- er take a short trip to Ne- vada and California. Amy Jean (Aejae) Kelly Final Arrangements February 22, 1979 - January 24, 2020 City of Cottage Grove to plant Hiroshima Peace Tree Handled with Care On Monday, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. in Coiner Park, Cottage Grove Mayor Jef- frey Gowing and the Ur- ban Forestry Committee will be planting a gingko biloba sapling germinated from seeds of a gingko tree that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima 75 years ago this August. The gingko sapling is one of 30 saplings that will be planted on public lands around the State of Ore- gon between now and May 2020. These peace trees are part of remembrance and reconciliation project or- 211info.org. No one can be turned away from a local health department because of the inability to pay for required vaccines. Aejae died unex- pectedly in Portland, Oregon on January 24th, 2020. Aejae was an epilepsy survivor and a long-time volunteer at Rose- haven, a shelter for women and children in Portland. Rosehav- en held a memorial service for Aejae on Feb 7 to honor the over 20 years of kind compas- sionate service for others. Ae- jae is survived by their twin, Meghan Kelly, partner Jay Jones, parents, Cecil and Lor- raine Simons of Cottage Grove, older sister Patti Guerra, older half-sisters Terri Jo Schlatter and Angie Chester, step sisters Claire and Robin Simons, niec- es and nephews, and grand- mother Doris Rawlings. Cremation was arranged by Crown Memorial Centers. A celebration of Aejae’s life will be held on the twin’s birthday, February 22nd, 2020 with friends and family at the London Grange in Cot- tage Grove, Oregon, at 1pm. In lieu of fl owers, their fami- ly requests that donations be made to Rosehaven or Charity of your choice. Ada Willetta Summerfi eld 1921-2019 Ada Willetta Summerfi eld of Cottage Grove, OR, passed away on December 7th, 2019 at the age of 98. Ada was born on April 29, 1921 to David and Viola Rice on a farm on Dan- iels Creek, about 15 miles up- river from Coos Bay. She was the twelft h child of seventeen children. Th ey enjoyed a robust country life where they were dairy farmers and raised crops. Th ough daily chores were ex- tensive for such a large fami- ly, her parents still took time to lead the family in singing, reading and baseball games. When she started school, she and eight of her siblings took a boat to school. She enjoyed school and made friends easily. Aft er WWII, Ada met and married Warren Noë. Th ey lived in Cottage Grove and had two children. Warren moved the family to the San Francis- co Bay area to work for United Airlines. Th ere they had their third child. Warren and Ada were accomplished ballroom dancers, they enjoyed travel and family, and playing bridge. Th ey were active in a growing and thriving American Baptist church where Ada taught Sun- day school. She opened their home to provide foster care to pre-adoptive babies and other young people, as well as being a den mother for Cub Scouts and Brownies. She then went back to school and became a secretary. Aft er 25 years, War- ren and Ada divorced. Ada later remarried and her second husband, George Summer- fi eld, was happy to move back to Cottage Grove when he re- tired so Ada could be closer to her sisters and brothers. Ada and George traveled to Europe and loved ballroom and square dancing. Ada was instrumental in starting the Senior Center in Cottage Grove and volun- teered there for many years. She was a talented landscape painter. She was also active in the Methodist Church. When George passed away, she con- tinued her activities until her health became a problem. She then moved to Magnolia Gar- dens where she made many new friends. She was a devoted writer, and a supportive, loving moth- er and friend. She walked hum- bly and quietly with God all of her life. Ada was preceded in death by her husband George, and fourteen of her siblings. She is survived by her sister Elizabeth Pappas of Yuma, AZ, brother Charles Rice of Cot- tage Grove, son Michael Noë of Hayward, CA, daughters Sheila Hudson and Patricia Noë of Cottage Grove and their hus- bands, 2 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, a stepdaughter and step-grandchildren, and dozens of nieces and nephews. Special appreciation and thanks to the hospice workers and the staff and caregivers of Magnolia Gardens who gave so much love and support to Ada.
