4B | THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2020 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL ODFW from B1 have good opportunities this weekend. • The following water- bodies will be stocked with trout this week: Hills Creek Reservoir, Cottage Grove Reservoir, Dorena Reser- voir, Cottage Grove Pond, Alton Baker Canoe Canal and Dexter Reservoir. • In the Coos and Co- quille basins, the water has been a bit high this week for good fishing. However, there are steelhead in the systems and some loca- tions could be fishable by the weekend. • There are good num- bers of steelhead in the South Umpqua and water levels are dropping. Fishing should be good this week- end. • Garrison Lake is a good destination for native trout, uncaught hatchery trout and even a few lunk- er, trophy trout! • The trout bite con- tinues to be good in the Holy Water, the stretch of the upper Rogue between the hatchery and the Lost Creek Lake spillway. • Cooper Creek Reser- voir was stocked with trout last week for a kids’ fishing event. Bet there’s still a few of those fish around. • A handful of popular destinations in the Willa- mette Zone are scheduled to be stocked this week. • Big ole brood trout have been stocked recently in Ochoco Reservoir and the Bend Pine Nursery Pond. • Most of Thief Valley Reservoir is ice-free and anglers can launch boats from the boat launch (though the dock is not in place). • Ice conditions, and fishing!, have been good at Phillips and Wolf Creek reservoirs. • Ice fishing on Kinney Lake and Magone Lake has been good. Check out 14 tips for ice fishing in Oregon. SIUSLAW RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has picked up on the Siu- slaw as the river is finally back in shape after high water and tough conditions for the last few weeks. Expect the fishing to re- main fair to good through February as more fish move into the system each day. The best fishing has been around the Whitaker Creek area. Lake Creek opened for winter steelhead fishing on Dec. 1. Fishing has been fair so far on Lake Creek and there are fish out there to be caught through the month of February. ICE FISHING SAFETY With several water bod- ies beginning to ice over, anglers need to be cautious during first-ice conditions. Take the following pre- cautions: use the “buddy system,” wear a PFD in case of thin ice, carry a throw-rope, and use a heavy metal staff to check & shoppe play buy stay for thin-ice. The Minne- sota DNR has developed guidelines for ice thickness and other safety tips. Remember, no drilled ice hole should be larger than 12 inches. UMPQUA WINTER STEELHEAD STUDY If you harvest a hatchery winter steelhead in the Umpqua Basin, please turn in the snouts from those fish. Some of these snouts contain small tags, which are not externally visible. Anglers who turn in snouts with these tags are entered into a raffle for a $50 gift card. Snout collection barrels are located around the basin, Sportsman’s Ware- house in Roseburg, or the Roseburg ODFW office. Tags obtained from the fish will inform ODFW on the best hatchery release tim- ing strategy to provide the most fish back to anglers in the future.
