RAIN AND HOLIDAYS IN THE FORECAST: BEST BETS FOR FISHING • This week’s rain should get more steelhead moving into the rivers. They also will create chal- lenging fishing conditions as water levels rise. Best bet, keep an eye on river levels and once they begin to drop, hit the river! • About 196 king-size rainbow broodstock will be stocked in Row River Nature Park Pond near Cot- tage Grove, Walling Pond in Salem, Timber Linn Lake in Albany, and Walter Wirth Lake in Salem. • Lost Lake Reservoir is a go-to trout fishing destination through- out the winter. • Trout anglers also can target the Crooked, lower Deschutes, Metolius, Klamath, Blitzen and Owyhee rivers, where fishing for native redbands is open throughout the year. Here are 7 tips for winter trout fishing. • The Ana Reservoir and River are good bets for winter fishing. Both are spring fed waterbodies and remain a constant temperature throughout the year. FISHING UPDATES 2019 Sport Groundfish Cabezon closed: Effective August 16 through December 31, 2019 boat-based recreational harvest of cabezon is closed. This restriction does not apply to shore- based fishing. China, copper and quillback rockfish closed: Effective August 23 through December 31, 2019 boat-based recreational harvest of copper, quillback and China rock- fish is closed. This restriction does not apply to shore-based fishing. Bottomfish open at all depths: Effective September 3, bottom- fish anglers are allowed to fish at any depth, including beyond the 40-fathom regulatory line. New for 2019 Topsmelt and jacksmelt are no longer part of the general marine species bag limit and are now part of the baitfish (herring, ancho- vy and smelts) daily limit of 25 pounds in aggregate. Local Sports Wrap-Up North Douglas basketball: The Warriors’ boys and girls teams each had two games last week, traveling to Lowell on Fri., Dec. 20 and to Crosshill Christian on Sat., Dec. 21. The boys earned a win against Lowell (1-5), taking down the Devils handily 64-36 before losing on Saturday to an undefeated and num- ber-one-ranked Crosshill squad, 64-49. The Warriors move to 5-3 overall on the season and are currently ranked #29 in OSAA 1A rankings. The girls extended their early-season win streak by defeating Lowell 41-31 on Friday, followed by a 56-25 drubbing of Crosshill the following day, putting their overall record at a tidy 8-0. The ninth-ranked Warriors, along with the boys team, will next play on Monday, Dec. 30 at Reedsport. Yoncalla basketball: The Eagles’ boys team headed north to the Regis Holiday Tournament last weekend, Dec. 19-21, going 2-1 in their three games. They defeated the host team (4-4) 41-38 on day one of the event before falling to a talented Scio squad on day two, 51-25. The Ea- gles were led by senior Elijah Allen’s 10 points and fi ve rebounds. In the fi nal game, Yoncalla narrowly beat Mohawk, 48-45, behind 13 points from junior Bryan Allen and 12 points from ju- nior Jordan Aguilar.
