But, accord- ing to head coach Jacob Jackomas, the trip has many purposes and is anchored in a local con- nection. “Some guys are try- ing to get recruited, so this [trip] helps,” Jacko- mas said after the game. “Some kids are trying to get better. We’ve got some young guys, three freshmen on the team, a couple of sophomores and we only have two se- niors. So it’s a bit of val- ue for everyone and ob- viously just the cultural experience, meeting dif- ferent people, but our di- rector of basketball went to Oregon so that’s where the connection comes from.” That would be Ellie Manou, a six-foot three- inch forward who played two seasons with the Ducks in 2007-08 and 2008-09 and now, in her job as Knox basketball director, is looking to further the Australia-Or- egon cultural and basket- ball connection. For his own part, Jack- omas leads his team with an impressive resume behind him, though not quite as impressive as Knox’s most famous alumnus, Hugh Jack- man. Before taking the helm at Knox, Jackomas spent time coaching in the Chinese Basketball Association and the Na- tional Basketball League, the top professional di- visions in Chinese and Australian basketball, respectively. His expe- rience in the game, and the size and talent of his players, were evident on Saturday evening. “We played pretty well tonight. We saw them a little bit on film, on the internet, just some high- light packages,” Jackomas said. “We got one player [Joshua Pain] who got going in the third and with the travel [Cottage Grove] had after playing last night, everything like that … It was actually a pretty good game for us, just lucky that Josh got going a bit.” Unlike American high school basketball, the Aussies not only play with a shot clock, but play with the 24-second NBA version, a fact that explains their ability to quickly and efficiently get open looks, whether under the hoop or from outside. “Because of [the shot clock] we do play a bit faster and we were just able to get it going today,” Jackomas said. All in all, however, the trip is about more than just early-season warm- up games. “For the kids, it’s just a different thing. It’s a to- tally different thing. They love the culture of Amer- ica, the music, the food, so they’re just enjoying every second of it,” Jack- omas said. “We’re going to Portland [Trailblaz- ers] and Oklahoma City [Thunder], then to see Golden State when we’re in the Bay Area. The kids are very excited.” Knox played anoth- er local opponent on Monday, Dec. 9, losing to Junction City 63-54 before continuing their American trip in the Bay Area and then Los Ange- les. For the Lions, they continue their 2019 sea- son tonight, Dec. 12 at home against Hidden Valley at 6 p.m. Relays from B1 breath air as much as I want to,” Thuesen said laughing, but was still happy with his inaugural perfor- mance and looks forward to his first year in the pool. “I’m very excited, not a lot of ner- vousness. I thought it was really fun,” he said. Senior Nadia Witt, who hasn’t swam competitively for three years, was also encouraged by the team’s early-season performance. “I felt really good,” Witt said. “I was really nervous because it was my first swim meet since my freshman year, but I liked how we raced. It was really nice.” The CGHS boys’ and girls’ swim teams next take to the pool this eve- ning, Thurs., Dec. 12 as Cascade Christian, Marist, Marshfield and Phoenix visit for the Cottage Grove Invite. Events are scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. erty Center. “But the relay meet is al- ways my favorite meet. It’s super fun and a good start to the year and a good transition for all the new people to feel more comfortable and have fun before it starts getting serious.” Fun or not, races were held and points nonetheless awarded. In team competition, the Lions finished third out of four with 106 total points, be- hind Marist (128) and North Eugene (122), but ahead of Marshfield (88). Highlights for Cottage Grove, how- ever, came in the 100 backstroke and 100 kickboard relays, which the Lions won in 1:17.43 and 1:19.92, respec- tively. For a team with 26 total swimmers, boys and girls combined, including a number of first-year participants, the relay meet was an ideal way to iron out some kinks and get in competitive races early in the sea- son. Jaden Thuesen is a junior at Cottage Grove High School and is competing in sports for the first time in 2019. After wrapping up his first season on the cross country team in the fall, Thuesen imme- diately noticed some differences after his PHOTO BY NICK SNYDER/CG SENTINEL Fisher Nash cheers on a teammate during the 200 first swim event. “I don’t get to kickboard relay at last Friday’s meet.
