15 Yoncalla Boys Basketball Team Schedule After a diffi cult few seasons, Eagles boys basketball has a talent-laden and experienced roster heading into the 2019-20 season. Head coach: Lourie Hall 2018-19 record: 9-15 overall, 4-9 league (6th in Skyline) Final OSAA rank: #45 Playoff result: Did not qualify This year's seniors entered Yoncalla High School in 2016, six months after the Eagles varsity basketball team finished 28-2 overall and ended the regular season ranked #1 in the state. The three seasons since haven’t brought the same success, but The Sentinel sat down with four Yoncalla players — juniors Bryan Allen, Trace Graham and Tyler Davis and senior Elijah Allen — to discuss their outlook on basketball, the school program and the year ahead. Do you have any expectations for the team this year? Tyler Davis: I definitely wanna make it far this season. Obviously, make it to state, or at least try and get there. Elijah Allen: Making playoffs. I just wanna make it to playoffs. Is there anything you’re particularly excited about heading into this season? Bryan Allen: Just a new team, new expectations, we got a new gym. We’re all athletic and stuff, but we like to bicker at each other. Team chemistry is a big part, espe- cially with the freshmen coming up. They’re just finally fitting into their roles which is really good. TD: I think we’ll be able to work really well with each other since we’ve already played so many sports togeth- er. I think we already have pretty good chemistry. Trace Graham: I think we have nine juniors on the team and we’re all buddies. We’ve all been together since fifth grade. Do you have any personal goals this year? BA: The big one is just staying healthy. Over the last three years I’ve been injury prone in every sport. TG: My personal goal is to keep my team together and, I don’t wanna say a ‘captain’, but be a good team- mate and a good leader. TD: Just get a lot of playing time and help my team- Have a Starring Season, CG Lions! What do you like to do outside of sports and school? EA: I like to play video games and lift. Over the sum- mer, my brother and I went to Sutherlin and worked out every day. TG: I mainly play sports, but I ride my quad a lot and hang out with my girlfriend. TD: I’m definitely a really outgoing person that always wants to go out and hang out with friends, do stuff on the weekends. BA: Hang out with friends. We’re a small school and everyone knows each other, especially the junior class. Head coach and Yoncalla native Kim Beer is making his return home to Douglas County after a number of years away. Beer started his coaching career with Yoncalla before taking a job coaching the girls’ team in La Pine where they won the 2009 OSAA 4A State Championship. “This is my twenty-ninth year coaching and twenty-five of those years are with girls,” Beer said. “I coached the boys in Lowell prior to coming here for three years and now I’m here in Yoncalla," Beer said. Sustained success has been hard to come by for the Ea- gles girls’ squad, but Beer brings a championship pedigree as a coach and knows that it all starts with hard work and Banquet Room Catering Full Service Bar Dance Floor commitment. “My expectations of myself and the kids is that we play as good as we possibly can with the capabilities that we have,” Beer said.” “My job is to bring that out of them. Their job is to do as good as they can. A lot of that is whether they buy in to what I’m doing or not … even the parents play a big role in that.” One-on-one with Kaleigh Soto and Alison Van Loon What are your personal goals for the season? AVL: I hope to get better overall and improve my ball- handling skills. KS: Well, my personal goal is for everyone to stop look- ing at us as the ‘sucky team’ because that’s how everyone looks at Yoncalla. We’ve never been really good at sports so I want to change their minds. Is there anything you’re particularly excited about this year? It’s great. Last year, we had about ten girls maybe and a lot of girls couldn’t play because of injuries and stuff like that. Some games we fin- ished with, like, three girls. What about team goals? AVL: I want us to all get better and work as a team. I want us to grow together, too. Can you tell me something about yourself outside of sports? AVL: I hang out with my friends. We just hang out and go do stuff, go to the tennis courts, play basketball games, hang out at the park. KS: I dunno … I could say what I might do after graduat- ing?
