After making a near- ly 400-mile drive to play Cottage Grove, La Grande got off to a slower start than expected when Lions’ senior Walker Humphrey took the ball in from the goal line, cutting the Ti- gers’ early lead to 14-6. La Grande didn’t look back from there, scoring 56 un- answered points over the final three quarters. Cottage Grove started senior all-leaguer Jacob Dunn at quarterback and hopes their reenergized offense can get them a win in their final game of the season at Junction City on Friday at 7 p.m. Volleyball: The Lions (10-9, 6-3) fought through a week where their al- ready-thin roster dealt with an injury bug. Soph- omores Gracie Arnold and Izabell Senters both sat out the team’s first game against Elmira (4-12, 0-9), but Cottage Grove still got the win 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-16). In the second game, the Lions came up short for the second time against fifth-ranked league cham- pion Junction City (17-4, 9-0), losing 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16). Ar- nold returned, but Sent- ers remained out, leaving the Lions with only seven healthy players. Junior Matty Ladd and sopho- more Peyton Kidd starred for Cottage Grove during the week, with 29 total kills and 56 total assists in the two games, respectively. Cross country: The Cottage Grove boys and girls cross country teams headed to Southeast Port- land last Saturday for the Warner Pacific XC Classic at Lents Park, running 11 participants in the 5k race. North Douglas Volleyball: North Douglas took a six-game winning streak into their matchup with rival and league favorite, Days Creek (23-2, 14-0). How- ever, much like their first battle, the Warriors came up short, losing 3-1 (25-15, 25-17, 15-25, 25-8) to the second-ranked Wolves. Despite the loss, North Douglas finished their Skyline league season in second place, securing an automatic playoff berth. Football: The Warriors (4-3, 3-1) took on their ri- vals to the south, the Yon- calla Eagles (1-3, 2-5), last Friday and won in a tight NICK SNYDER/COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL The shorthanded lions got big contributions from junior Matty Ladd (10) and sophomore setter Peyton Kidd (12) in a hard-fought loss against the Junction City Tigers. game 44-36. Yoncalla Football: Before the season began, nearly ev- ery Yoncalla player made it known that one of their primary goals for the sea- son was beating North Douglas. The Eagles (2-5, 1-3) gave it their best ef- fort, but were narrowly beaten by the Warriors 44- 36. Yoncalla enters next week with another rivalry game on the slate, taking on Elkton on Friday. It is each teams’ final game of the season and the out- come will determine who finishes at the bottom of the league standings. Volleyball: Yoncalla (7- 12, 4-10) closed out their final week of the season with a high and a low. They began on Tues., Oct. 15 by defeating Umpqua Valley Christian (7-10, 5-9) 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-15), but were drubbed later in the week by the Elkton Elks 3-0 (25- 18, 26-24, 25-11). While the Eagles fin- ished in ninth place in the Skyline league, the young team finished the season strong, winning three out of their final five league matchups.
