4B | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2019 | COTTAGE GROVE Local Sports Wrap-up ODFW from B1 hikers, and fish are feed- ing heavily in preparation for the upcoming winter. COTTAGE GROVE POND (ROW RIVER NATURE PARK POND): trout, warmwater species Scheduled to be stocked this week with 400 trophy-size fish. Cottage Grove Ponds are open to year-round fishing and via an asphalt pathway behind the truck scales on Row River Road. In addition to fishing, these ponds also offer wildlife viewing opportu- nities and a fishing dock is available on-site. DETROIT RESERVOIR: trout, kokanee This large reservoir will be stocked again this week with about 3,250 trophy-size trout. Fishing for kokanee has slowed down as the bigger fish are getting ready to spawn, but trout are still active and can be found throughout the lake. Currently, the reser- voir is down only about 48 feet. Water is being released to make room for winter storage, but anglers should still be able to use Mongold State Park to launch their boats throughout the fall. Check the US Army Corps of Engineer’s website for more information. DORENA RESERVOIR: trout, warmwater Will be stocked this week with 5,000 tro- phy-size rainbow trout. JUNCTION CITY POND: trout, crappie The pond was stocked in May with 1,100 trout. During the summer, anglers are likely to catch bass, bluegill or bull- head catfish. Anglers are reminded that you are allowed to keep one trout over 20-inches as part of the five fish bag limit. LEABURG LAKE: trout Was last stocked the week of August 12 with 933 legal-size rainbow trout. Leaburg Lake is open to fishing all year. Bait can be used from April 22 – Oct. 31, but beginning Nov. 1, anglers may only use lures and artificial flies. All wild trout must be released. Only hatch- ery fish may be kept. RAZOR CLAM Clatsop Beach razor clam season opened on Oct. 1. The best low tides have switched to the evenings so harvesters should plan accordingly. Clammers should expect a high abundance of razor clams 3 ½ inches or less. Targeting the largest “show,” greater than a nickel in diameter, will greatly increase the odds of harvesting a larger clam. Razor clam season starts to slow down at beaches south of Clatsop as the end of good day- time negative low tides approaches. For the Central Coast area, diggers report mixed success at Newport beaches, with more clams landed at North Jetty and Agate Beach. hawk (14-4, 11-0). Volleyball: After win- ning four of their previous five games, the Lions hit a miniature skid last week, losing both of their match- ups and falling to 9-8 over- all and 5-2 in league play. The first loss came on Thurs., Oct 10 at the hands of the visiting Marshfield Pirates (10-8, 3-4) who took Cottage Grove the distance, ultimately win- ning in five sets 3-2 (25-18, 18-25, 24-26, 25-23, 15-7). The Lions were without one of their key players, sophomore outside hitter Gracie Arnold. Cottage Grove then traveled to the coast for the Seaside Tour- nament where they were ousted in their first match by Astoria 2-1 (25-16, 20- 25, 15-11). The Lions sit alone in second place in Sky-Em play and will next play league leader and fifth- ranked Junction City (13- 3, 7-0) on Thurs., Oct. 17. North Douglas Volleyball: The War- riors had an up-and-down experience at the Sept. 28 McKenzie RPI tourna- ment, but since then have won six consecutive league games without dropping a set. From Oct. 1 through Oct. 12 North Douglas defeated Camas Valley, Glendale, Elkton, Riddle, Powers and Yoncalla all by a final score of 3-0. This string of success brings their overall record to 19- 6, with a league record of 12-1 and a season-high number six ranking in OSAA 1A volleyball. The Warriors will close out their season this week with a home match against league leader Days Creek (21-2, 12-0) on Thurs., Oct. 17, fol- lowed by their final game on Tues., Oct. 22 at Mo- Cross country: Both the boys and girls cross coun- try teams made their way to Philomath High School last Sat., Oct. 12 for the Paul Mariman Invitational 5k. North Douglas now finds themselves ranked twelfth in 1A and in third place in league play, be- hind Lowell (5-1, 3-0) and Mapleton (6-0, 3-0). The Warriors will look to capture their third win in a row this Fri., Oct. 18 when they travel south to take on rival Yoncalla (2-4, 1-2). of the season on Fri., Oct. 18. against Oakridge, then wrapping up their season Fri., Oct. 25 at Yoncalla. Volleyball: Yoncalla (6-11, 3-9) may have lost their matchup to North Douglas last Sat., Oct. 12 - as did a number of other opponents - but they start- ed that same day with a big victory against Powers (9-6, 7-6), a team ranked ten spots higher than the Eagles in the 1A rankings. The game went the dis- tance as Yoncalla came back from two sets down to win 3-2 (22-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-11). Yon- calla’s final game of the season will be at Elkton on Thurs., Oct. 17. Yoncalla Football: Much like the Elks, the Yoncalla Ea- gles (2-4, 1-2) have found Skyline league play to be a difficult road, losing 48-13 at Mapleton (6-0, 3-0) for their second drubbing in a row. This matchup was the- second of a three game stretch where the Eagles face Lowell, Mapleton and North Douglas - the top three teams in the league. Yoncalla next takes on the North Douglas Warriors in their penultimate game Elkton Volleyball: The Elks (9-7, 8-4) couldn’t keep up with North Douglas in their first matchup of the week on Tues., Oct. 8, losing 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-16). Elkton, however, came through on Sat., Oct. 12, outlasting Camas Valley - currently third in the Skyline league - in five sets, 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 17- 25, 25-15, 15-6). The Elks are now in fourth place in league play with one remaining game, Thurs. Oct. 17 at home against Yoncalla. Football: Elkton (2-3, 0-3) started the season with two straight wins, but league play has been a different story. The Elks dropped their third con- secutive game last week, losing 54-14 at Lowell on Thurs., Oct. 10. Having already played league leaders Mapleton, North Douglas and the aforementioned Lowell, Elkton will try to finish their season strong in their final two games, first on Fri., Oct. 18 at home Undisputed leader in sports with exclusive NFL SUNDAY TICKET.
