By Ben Deatherage Cottage Grove Speedway Despite only two classes on the card for the Friday, June 14th, bout at Cottage Grove Speedway, fans were treated to some incredi- ble racing. Th e Interstate Sprint Car Series opened up their 2019 season af- ter the fi rst weekend was rained out a month ago. Also, in attendance were the Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifi eds. Harrisburg’s Tyler Th ompson was dominant for so much of the Inter- state Sprint Car Series main event. Th ompson held onto the race lead until lapped traffi c held him up briefl y. It was just enough for Jack- sonville teenager Tanner Holmes to put himself in a position to win. Holmes made the key move in turns three and four to edge his way past Th ompson on the fi nal corner. It is the fi rst career ISCS win for Tanner Holmes and crew. Tyler Th ompson was second while Kinzer Cox, of Cottage Grove, was third. Roseburg drivers Jake Waddell and Vern Scevers were fourth and fi ft h respectively. Earlier in the evening Junction City’s Shane Forte won the con- solation feature. In the Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifi eds the action would be just as intense in their main event. Spring- fi eld’s Steve Sturdevant set the tone early until getting shuffl ed back to second on lap six by Curtis Towns, of Cottage Grove. Towns had a fast race car, but Collen Winebarger made a deci- sive move on a restart to become the fi rst multi-fea- ture victor in the class in 2019. Bricen James was a re- spectable second over third fi nishing Jake Mayden, of Springfi eld. Keizer’s John Campos placed fourth over Curtis Towns, in fi ft h. Th e historical quarter-mile clay oval hosted Dad’s Night where all fathers got into the races for free. Five classes were on the card in- cluding the Wingless Sprint Series, Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifi eds, Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods and Hornets. Th e previous two events for the Wingless Sprint Series at CGS had unfor- tunately fell to rain but the proverbial third time was the charm to fi nal get a race completed. Portland standout Joey Tanner made the journey south to Cottage Grove for the fi rst time in 2019. Tan- ner would park his presti- gious mount in the winner’s circle and win in his fi rst appearance adding anoth- er impressive win to his already incredible overall win count this season. Af- ter sweeping the weekend at Willamette Speedway not too long ago, Corbett teenager Skyler Winebarg- er bested the fi eld in IMCA Sport Mods for his fi rst CGS win. Finally, Eugene chauff eur Joe Maricle col- lected his second win in the Hornets. Cottage Grove Speedway returns to racing on Satur- day, June 22nd, for Grad Night. All class of 2019 graduates will get into the races for free. Four classes are on the bill including the Todd’s Auto Body Sprints, IMCA Sport Mods, Street Stocks, and Hornets. Pit Gates open at 1:00 p.m., Front Gates 5:00, and Racing is scheduled to get kicked off at 6:00. Tick- ets are $13 for Adults, Se- niors/Juniors/Military $10, Youths (6-12) $5, and Chil- dren (5 & Under) are free. CGS off ers a Family Pass (2 Adults and up to 4 Youths) for $35, VIP Skybox Seating is $25 each and Pit Passes are $30.
