COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL | WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2019 | 3A Community News Free bacteria testing offered for local water well owners The Marist Catholic High School Water Well Screening Program is offer- ing free bacteria testing for Cottage Grove area water well owners impacted by recent flooding. The testing is conducted by science students as part of a hands-on water quality program, with teacher/staff guidance and oversight. Both total coliform and E. coli bacteria are tested. Test kits are available at the Brew Station and Coast Fork Feed Store, located at 106 South Sixth Street in Cottage Grove. Test kits include a sterile bacteria bottle, sample collection Memorial bench installed for Kreamier instructions and contact information. Interested well owners should call the phone num- ber listed in the kit to make an appointment and obtain more information. Date for this free bacte- ria-testing event is sched- uled for Friday, May 10, and appointments are necessary because space is limited. Results will be emailed or mailed to customers with- in a week. The program makes every effort to gen- erate reliable results. How- ever, it should be noted that the school program is not a certified drinking water laboratory. Household Hazardous Waste Roundup set for Saturday There will be a free Household Hazardous Waste Roundup for up to 35 gallons total per partic- ipant on Saturday, May 11, from businesses, schools, churches or non-profit or- ganizations may be subject to disposal fees. The collection will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Lane County Fire & Rescue, 233 Harrison Ave. in Cottage Grove. All community members are welcome to participate in the Roundup. What to bring: Paint, household cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals, car care products, arts and crafts products, and oth- er household hazardous waste. Check labels for words like flammable, corrosive, poison, caution, and dan- ger. Do not bring: Empty con- tainers, drums, radioactive waste, asbestos or explo- sives. Any empty contain- ers can be safely thrown in the trash. For information about disposal of radioactive waste, asbestos and explo- sives, call 541-682-4120. Businesses, non-prof- it organizations, schools and churches that generate small amounts of hazard- ous waste may pre-register to bring that waste to this event. They must pay for disposal of the waste, but most can save money by using this program, rather than hiring a contractor on their own. DAMIEN SHERWOOD/COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL Nancy Kreamier sits on the bench dedicated to her father, Clarence Kreamier, who passed away April 17. Also known as the “Cottage Grove Waver,” Clarence obtained local fame by routinely waving at passers-by from the corner of 16th and Main streets, which is where the city donated and installed his memorial bench. “He would have loved this,” said Nancy. “And how the commu- nity’s come out, I’m actually at a loss for words.” Cottage Grove Library receives Pilcrow Letter Carriers collecting Grant to purchase children’s books food donations Saturday The Pilcrow Foundation, in partnership with funding from the Friends of the Cottage Grove Public Library, along with Hal Ber- enson and Laura Ackerman, have provided funding to purchase 93 new books to add to the library’s permanent collection. These new books will include 22 math and STEM-themed science books. The newly purchased Pilcrow Foundation books are now avail- able to the community for check- out. When patrons check out any of these new books, they are welcome to pick out an animal bookmark. They will also receive a book- mark that thanks all of the funding partners, as well as a coloring page on the back. Stop by the library and check out the new Pilcrow Foundation books. This Saturday, May 11, the National Asso- ciation of Letter Carriers (NALC) will host its annual food drive. This is the largest one- day food drive in the United States. For res- idents wanting to donate an item of canned food, simply put the food donation by your mailbox and your letter carrier will do the rest. The NALC would like to thank the United States Postal Service, Food for Lane County and Crosstown Movers for helping to make this food drive a success. Meet SHANE HITNER Why do you work at Brads?
