And she hits so well.” With the wins, North Doug- las moved up to third in the state-rankings heading into the fi nal week of the season. To fi nish the regular season off the team has ninth ranked Oak- land (16-3, 12-2) at home on Wednesday and a double-head- er on the road at Mohawk (8-9, 7-7) on Friday. “We’ve got three games left and as long as we win two of the three, we’re guaranteed league championship. Knock on wood. Did I say that out loud? I just jinxed us,” said Rice with a laugh. “I think we’re re- ally coming together right now and at the perfect time of the year, going into the playoff s. I feel good about it.” Cottage Grove competes at Ciochetti, head to districts By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com Competing in the last meet before Sky-Em Dis- tricts, Cottage Grove hosted the annual Wally Ciochetti Invitational last Friday. Under the bright lights at the night meet, it was Cot- tage Grove junior Jimmy Talley who shined for the Lions on the track. It was Talley taking second in the 3,000 meters Friday night as Newport’s Leo Johns, who holds the fastest time in 4A this season, won the event. While Johns holds the fast- est time, Talley is now sec- ond in 4A this season. In the fi eld events, Cot- tage Grove got fi rst place fi nishes from junior Mitch- ell Krokus and sophomore Matty Ladd. Krokus, who has the second longest jump in 4A this season, won the triple-jump competition at 42-05.50. Ladd took fi rst in high jump at 5-2 which is tied for the fi ft h-best mark in 4A. Freshman Gracie Ar- nold was third in the high jump competition with a clearance of fi ve feet. Ladd also took fi ft h in the 100 and seventh in tri- ple jump. Junior teammate Payton Cameron fi nished eighth in triple jump. Other top-eight fi nishers for Cottage Grove include: Arnold at fourth in javelin, senior Riley Hutchins sixth in javelin, sophomore An- nah Nyburg fourth place in the 800, senior Paesen Timm sixth place in the 1500, senior Drake English fi ft h in high jump, freshman Isaac Stere seventh in high jump, junior Fernando So- to-Cruz seventh in the 400, sophomore Drew Chapman seventh in the 3000, sopho- more Adelle Kent seventh in pole vault and sophomore Evan Snauer seventh in jav- elin. On Friday and Saturday the Lions will compete at the Sky-Em district meet at Marist High School. Heading into the piv- otal meet, Talley has the top time in the 3000 while Krokus sits at the top of the league in triple jump and second in long jump. In high jump, English, Stere and senior Erick Giff en are all ranked in the top-three in high jump. For the Cottage Grove girls, the team has a hand- ful of competitors who are looking to punch their ticket to the state meet. Ar- nold and Ladd have the top marks in high jump while Arnold also has the farthest javelin throw of the season. Riley Hutchins is currently third in javelin. Th e event just happened to be the ul- tra-popular Fan Appreci- ation Night, where during intermission all the cars in the pit area come out on the track and drivers gave auto- graphs. Classes on the bill included the Todd’s Auto Body Sprint Cars, Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifi eds, Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods, and Hornets. Th e Todd’s Auto Body EVERYONE DESERVES A GREAT SMILE! Sprints were in action for the fi rst time in 2019. Cot- tage Grove’s Ian Bandey picked up a major win in his young career, his fi rst at CGS. Defending track champion Shane Forte, of Junction City, was the run- ner-up with Ricky Ashley, from Th urston, in third. Harrisburg teenager Tyler Th ompson placed fourth over fi ft h fi nishing Orion Redmond, out of Roseburg. Forte was fastest in time trials while winning in the heat races were Forte, McK- enzie Bridge youngster A.J. Harbaugh, and Sutherlin veteran Vern Scevers. In Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifi ed competition de- fending track champion Jake Mayden returned to victory lane. Th e Springfi eld chauf- feur became the third diff er- ent winner in as many races in the classifi cation. Cot- tage Grove’s Evan Britton posted an impressive sec- ond while fellow CG driver Tyler Smith was third. Th e rest of the top fi ve was made up of Kevin Williamson, from Coburg, in fourth and Springfi eld’s Aaron Sheelar, in fi ft h. Sheelar was the fastest driver in qualifying while heat race wins went to Britton and Sheelar. Th e Late Models made their 2019 debut with a great car count. Sweet Home pi- lot Brian Smith managed to take the checked fl ag fi rst to claim victory over the rest of the fi eld. Eugene’s Ed Peters was a respectable second while Trent Elliott, of La Pine, was third. Mike Peters, from Cottage Grove, ended his evening in fourth over fi ft h place driver Craig Hanson, out of Albany. El- liott managed to get quick time during qualifying while Elliott and Smith were the two heat race victors. Th e IMCA Sport Mods would make another ap- pearance at the ¼-mile clay oval. Winston driver Bud- dy McHargue bested the fi eld to become the third diff erent winner in as many races so far this year. Rose- burg regular David Schmidt posted a second-place ef- fort while Jayson Nelson, of Springfi eld, was behind him in third. Th e balance of the top fi ve consisted of Cot- tage Grove’s Matt Brown, in fourth, over Shawn Hand, from Springfi eld, in fi ft h. Hand laid down the best time in time trials while in heat race action McHargue and Brandon Fox accumu- lated the wins.
