Opal Theater will host Th e Very Little Th eatre has announced its produc- tion of “Proof ” by David Auburn, directed by Larry K. Fried and presented in Stage Left . In this oft en funny, Pulit- zer Prize and Tony Award winning play, David Au- burn raises many questions about what might be un- answerable yet goes to the heart of our vulnerable hu- manity. Th e VLT cast of Proof will feature Erica Towe as “Catherine,” Bill Campbell as “Robert,” Chris Gillool- ey-Kress as “Hal” and Janna Slack as “Claire.” Th ere will be seven per- formances: Friday through Sunday, April 26-28, and Th ursday through Sunday, May 2-5. Th e play centers on eve of Catherine’s 25th birthday, as she stands on the precipice between genius and mad- ness. Aft er years of caring for her deranged, recently deceased father, Cather- ine is uncertain as to how to move forward and what life might hold. Her father, Robert, was a famous math- ematician who solved the previously unsolvable in his youth. Th en his brilliant and inquisitive mind turned against him, rendering him incapable of further signifi - cant discoveries. Or has it? Robert believed Cather- ine could exceed his own math achievements. Cath- erine mostly fears she has inherited his mental insta- bility. Her very stable and professional sister, Claire arrives to take care of every- thing, including Catherine. Enter Hal, a former graduate student of Robert’s, now a math professor himself. Hal is combing Robert’s 100- plus rant-fi lled notebooks for the undiscovered gem he believes must certainly be there. Catherine knows better but likes having Hal around. Romance blooms and, in her happiness, Cath- erine provides Hal the key to a secret she has held back from everyone else. Unexpectedly, ecstatic joy turns to doubt — and Cath- erine is pushed to the very edge.
