6A • COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL • MARCH 27, 2019 Spring Whale Watch Week continues through Saturday Lane Electric Cooperative off ering scholarships for high school seniors, adults Lane Electric Cooperative of- fers several scholarships to members of all ages, from high school seniors to adults who desire continuing educa- tion. Below are details about each off ering. For all scholar- ships, a qualifying member or family member is defi ned as: A Lane Electric member, or dependent of a member, who has an active account, and is in good standing with Lane Elec- tric Cooperative. Applications are due to Lane Electric’s offi ce no later than 1 p.m. on Th ursday, April 4. Applications are available for download at www.laneelectric. com/scholarships Th e Spring Whale Watch Week event returned to the coast March 23 as more than 20,000 Gray whales migrate north past Oregon over the next few months. Trained volunteers from the Whale Watching Spoken Here pro- gram are stationed at 24 sites along the coast from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, ready to help visitors spot the mi- grating mammals. A map of the volunteer-staff ed sites is available on whalespoken. org. Th e Whale Watching Cen- ter in Depoe Bay is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Vis- itors to the center can enjoy interactive whale exhibits and take in the panoramic ocean views. Binoculars are provided. Rangers from Or- egon State Parks will also be on hand to answer questions about the whales. An online live stream of whale activity in Depoe Bay returns this spring too; watch it on the Oregon State Parks YouTube chan- nel during the event. Gray whales migrate north along the coast of the west- ern U.S. annually during spring; they return to Alas- kan waters aft er wintering in the warm lagoons off the coast of Baja, Mexico. Many of the Gray whales will be accompanied by their new calves, born during the win- ter. Th e fi rst large groups of whales pass by Oregon mid- March and the migratory stream typically continues into June. Th e spirit and intent of this schol- arship is to provide an oppor- tunity for eligible Lane Electric members, or their dependents, who are interested in beginning a college career. Lane Electric off ers one $4,500 scholarship for persons inter- ested in attending Lane Com- munity College (LCC) in the fall. Th e spirit and intent of this scholarship is to provide an op- portunity for eligible Lane Elec- tric members who have been in the workplace for a period of time; members whose jobs have ended; members interest- ed in changing careers; or for parents who have raised their children and are now ready to begin a college career, etc. TA training program. Th e line construction trade off ers a rewarding career with exceptional pay and benefi ts, and Lane Electric’s desire is to develop a qualifi ed pool of candidates for future positions in the electric utility industry.
