6A • COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL • MARCH 20, 2019 Local author’s first book signing rescheduled after being snowed out Last month’s snowstorm scuttled a lot of plans and rou- tines. For local resident McK- enzie Peters, it meant putting off a book-signing event fol- lowing the release of her first publication, Persephone in Oregon: A Photographic Jour- ney Through Time. However, the book is available on Ama- zon as of today, with the offi- cial book signing now taking place April 19 at Bookmine. This is Peters’ first book and is coauthored by anoth- er local writer and photogra- pher, Bob Zybach. Peters and Zybach have worked togeth- er on a number of forestry- and history-related research projects over the past sever- al years, but this is their first collaboration on a book of fiction. Persephone’s story is close- ly based on Greek mythology and begins with her arriv- al in primeval Oregon from the sea, blue-haired and na- ked in the late afternoon of a New Moon. Here, she finds an Eden-like country of great ferns and grasses, waterfalls, rivers= and giant forest trees — but no flowers, no animals, no people. The book features 45 fine- art photographs that follow Persephone through the seasons as she travels across Oregon on Lunar and Solar time tables, visiting and stay- ing in strange and beautiful locations known to very few people ever — and rarely in- dicating any human presence to this time. Peters has modeled part- time since her teenage years, but this is her first nude modeling. The experience of taking photographs over the course of an entire year in locations all over Oregon is something Peters described as “exhilarating,” while the actual writing was a “good challenge.” Despite the delay in formal release and book signing, Persephone in Oregon is now available on Amazon for $65. A Kindle e-book version of the book has also been re- leased over the past year as a six-part serial for $5 per ep- isode. Full-size individual il- lustrations from the book can be purchased online as PDF files and are available at the Bookmine as prints or fine- art photographs. -Submitted Report PHOTO BY BOB ZYBACH McKenzie Peters with her new book, Persephone in Oregon Rainy Eyes to perform in Cottage Grove March 23 Folk music artist Rainy Eyes prepares to hit the road this month with a five-date tour of the Pacific Northwest, including a stop in Cottage Grove this weekend. The spring tour comes ahead of the May release of her debut album, “Moon in the Mir- ror,” which was co-produced by Eli West and features Grammy-award winner Pe- ter Rowan on one of their two co-writes on the album. The Rainy Eyes north- west spring tour begins at the Triple Door Lounge in Seattle, Washington, and ends at Sam Bond’s Garage in Eugene, Ore., where she will open for fellow folk art- ist Penny Opry. Rainy Eyes will be playing a repertoire of originals and traditional tunes on guitar and banjo. Her music is steeped in the folk tradition, featuring ele- ments of rock, bluegrass and OPAL Counseling Services roots music. She’ll perform at the Axe & Fiddle on Saturday, March 23, at TIME?
