COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL • MARCH 1, 2019 • CG Business Challenge kick-off rescheduled In 2017, a local resident and business owner walked into the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce of- fice with an idea about how to encourage entrepre- neurship, create new jobs and give back to the com- munity that contributed to his own success. Harold Frazier of New Breed Seed Company do- nated $10,000 and said he simply wanted it to go to someone with a great busi- ness plan that would create new jobs in the Cottage Grove area. The Chamber of Com- merce, Cottage Grove Community Development Corporation and RAIN Eugene joined for several months of meeting, and in those meetings the Cottage Grove Business Challenge was born. Twenty-four hopeful en- trepreneurs took the chal- lenge and three were cho- sen to receive funds to help start their businesses: Mike Caven of Sanity Chocolate won the first-place prize of $6,000; Joey Jaraczewski of Sohr Performance + Nutri- tion won $3,000; and Kim Johnson with Real Live Food Oregon won $1,000. Entrepreneurs are in- vited invited once again to take the challenge and submit their business plan ideas for a chance to win up to $10,000 in start-up funding. Submissions must come in the form of a (no more than four-page) executive summary of their business plan and the business must create new jobs in the Cot- tage Grove area. Originally, a kickoff net- working event to generate interest was scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m., at The Brewsta- tion, 106 Sixth St. in Cot- tage Grove. However, the power- ful winter storm that shut down Cottage Grove made it necessary to cancel the original kick-off date. So, it is being rescheduled for sometime next week. More details and the new kick-off date will be avail- able in the March 6 edition of The Sentinel. In the meantime, all in- terested parties including entrepreneurs, investors, sponsors and business leaders are encouraged to attend the kickoff event when it is rescheduled. Additional challenge in- formation can be found at www.cgbizplan.com. Those who accept the challenge will have ac- cess to a series of classes through Lane Communi- ty College and the Small Business Development Center, Liveplan business plan writing software will be provided by Palo Alto, as well as mentor support from seasoned business leaders. Submissions for the Cot- tage Grove Business Chal- lenge are due May 1. 3A Carousel Board welcomes newest, youngest member COURTESY PHOTO The Friends of the Cottage Grove Carousel Board recently welcomed its newest and youngest voting member of the governing board, Destiny Duerst (center), who is is a 2017 Cottage Grove High School graduate. In 2017, Duerst and her best friend, Ryani, organized a spaghetti feed that raised more than $2,000 to purchase clothing for the home- less.
