6A • COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL • JANUARY 9, 2019 Lane County to host free plastics round-up; early access for communuty collectors Lane County Waste Man- agement is hosting a plastics roundup for clean #2, #4 and #5 (polyethylene and poly- propylene) at the Glenwood Transfer Station in April and off ering early access to busi- nesses, churches, individuals and neighborhood groups who sign up as “community collectors.” In an eff ort to limit car- bon dioxide (CO2) emis- sions, Lane County is seek- ing community collectors to gather plastics from employ- ees, neighbors and friends. Registered community collectors can begin collect- ing materials in January and February, then will be able to make an appointment to drop off plastics in March and April. Lane County will provide registered community collec- tors with signage, collection sacks, promotion (if desired), training and instructions on correct material preparation. To register as a commu- nity collector, visit www. l a n e c ou nt y. w u f o o. c om / forms/community-collec- tor-sign-up/ or call 541-682- 6536. Our partner, plastics pro- cessor Denton Plastics, ac- cepts #2, #4 and #5 tubs, jugs, bottles, lids and 6-pack han- dles that are clean and free of debris (labels removed). Materials must be sorted in the following material cat- egories: #2 bottles & jugs; #2 tubs and lids; #2 6-pack han- dles; #4 bottles, tubs and lids; #5 bottles, tubs and lids. Depending on what ma- terials you collect, this could represent up to (5) fi ve sepa- rate categories. Residents who are not able to fi nd a community collector are encouraged to come to the Plastics Round- up on Sunday, April 7, at the Glenwood Transfer Station from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Unsorted, dirty or incor- rect plastic materials will not be accepted. Last September, Lane County staff and Master Re- cycler volunteers teamed up with Denton Plastics, a Portland processor, to collect 2.76 tons of plastic delivered by 963 customer vehicles. Th is event was in response to the growing needs of Lane County residents who want a solution for plastics recycling during the disruption to in- ternational recycling mar- kets. Lane County has the highest recycling rate in Ore- gon — and it’s thanks to ded- icated community members. Recycling has many benefi ts and one of the biggest is the environmental benefi t of re- ducing the amount of raw materials and energy need- ed to make products from scratch. Th e resin from recycled plastics is used to make products such as park bench- es and decking, fl ower pots, electronic component parts, and much more. Additional information and a new waste reduction newsletter can be found at lanecounty.org/plastics- roundup. Residents can also email questions to plasticsround- up@ co.lane.or.us. For information about what is recyclable in Lane County, ask the Garbage Guru.
