COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL DECEMBER 26, 2018 3B Fast start leads Yoncalla to victory Cottage Grove and North Douglas athletes named to all-state teams Eagles rush out to 18-0 nothing lead aft er one quarter of play By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com It was an off ensive outpour- ing in the fi rst quarter for the Yoncalla girls basketball team. At home on Friday night, the Eagles went up 18-0 aft er one quarter of play as they recorded a 39-19 win over Siletz Valley. Instead of being wrapped up by the play in the fi rst quarter, head coach Nick Edera was more focused on the team’s two- point third quarter. “[Th e fi rst quarter] just kind of happened, I guess. We’re not off ensively great yet by any means and we’ve got to get over these cold-spells of two, three [points per] quarter or really good teams are going to pound our face in for us,” said Edera. In the opening quarter, the Eagles were fl ying around the court moving the ball, fi ghting for every rebound and creating easy buckets. Kaleigh Soto start- ed the game with six straight points before defense turned into easy off ense for Shaunasi Hardy. Soto fi nished the game with 11 points while Hardy led all scorers with 14. Th e visiting Warriors opened up their scoring with a three-pointer from Syanne Kai- ser midway through the second quarter. Kaiser and her team- mate Lavonna Butler each fi n- ished the game with nine points. In the third quarter Siletz Valley outscored Yoncalla 6-2 which had Edera wondering how to string multiple positive quarters together instead of having an too easy, forget about doing it a second time. I think it’s just con- sistency, we’ve got to get better.” With two weeks off with no games, the Eagles will open league play on January 4 at Elk- ton. And before then, Edera is looking to improve across the board. “Defensively, our zone is still By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com Last week the fall all-state athletes were announced and the list featured seven local athletes. But a lot of it is in fast breaks and stuff we like to run right down the middle and block everyone else out. We fi - nally ran it outside and we were able to fi nd somebody,” he said. “Once we do it right it’s like it’s For football, Cottage Grove’s Erick Giff en was named fi rst team wide receiver and honor- able mention kicker. Quarter- back Dylan Graves and wide receiver Jacob Dunn were both given second team honors. At the 4A volleyball level, Cottage Grove’s Reilly Kelty and Cassidy Herbert were fi rst team all-state. At the 1A level, North Doug- las seniors Arianna Helgren and Abby Whipple were both named to the fi rst team. Cassidy Herbert Reilly Kelty Abby Whipple Arianna Helgren wide open. A really good guard will penetrate it and lay the ball in. We’ve got to help each other on defense a lot better than we were. Off ensively, we’ve to move the ball a lot better,” he said. “We’re just standstill with it and let the zone catch back up. So we’ve got a lot to work on going into break.” Middlefi eld Men’s Club Monday 12/17/2018 Game: 3M Best Ball Fourth Place (tie): -19 Ron Ackerman, Bill Avery, John Kallbrier, Mike Stahl First Place: -22 Jake Cox, Larry Emery, Gary Ingram, Dave Tooker Fourth Place (tie): -19 Darrell Lee, Dan Smith, Larry Strickland, Don Perkins BD Second Place (tie): -20 Manny Anderson, Leon Hayes, Steve Lindholm, Pat Rickard Sixth Place: -14 Jim Cunningham, Dan Smith BD, Don Perkins, Jerry Singer Second Place (tie): -20 Gary Culp, Frank Gates, Phil Hamilton, Jim Lehl Low Gross: Dan SMith 71 Gary Ingram 71 Low Net: Darrell Lee 59 Gary Culp 61 Bill Avery 62 Jake Cox Closest to the Pin #5 Darrell Lee #7 Don Perkins HOMESTEAD FURNITURE is this Week’s Panel Winner with 10 correct T.
