It was a spot where, occasionally, you could see a fl ame burst up. “Someone would spill whis- key and light it on fi re to get rid of it,” Gilbert said. But Main Street wasn’t the only place teenagers found their fun. “Th ere were dances up Wildwood Falls too,” Everett said. Gilbert added, “If you wanted to see some fi ghting or something, you could go up there. It was prohibition. If you wanted any booze, you had to make your own. But someone give [my broth- er] some 'white lighting' or something and he said he was doing just fi ne until he went to cross the bridge — and that bridge went right up and hit him in the face.” As their boyhoods faded and they grew into their teen years, the twins went to work. First at the railroad, and then what used to be Woodard’s Mill. “Th at was at 17. At 18, you were allowed to work in the woods then, so I learned how to set a choker,” Gilbert said. A choker is essentially, a metal cable that wraps around the tree and the choker set runs up and down the hill all day while trees fall to the land- ing. According to Gilbert, the size of the chokers isn’t the same as they used to be: the trees are a diff erent size now. And while Everett and his wife now spend half the year in California happily retired, Gil- bert remains on the property, not quite as retired. “What do I do all day? Peo- ple always ask me that,” he said. His pickup truck parked outside is full of split wood he still has to stack and deliver, a choker in the backseat. 418 A St., Springfi eld, OR 97477 • 541-968-2403 Adorn your table with a Beautiful Fall Centerpiece this Holiday Season from... 2018 Featuring Handcrafted Gifts, International Food Court, & Live Music Lane Events Center • Free Admission • Free Parking Weekends: Nov. 17-18•23-25 • Dec. 1-2•8-9•15-16•22-24 Hours: 10am -6pm (closing at 4pm on Dec 24th) Visit www.holidaymarket.org The Flower Basket and Gift Boutique A flower shop and so much more... 6RXWKWK6WUHHW DONATE NOW!
