Th e season, originally set to start Oct. 1, has been delayed. Th e Lane County Fire De- fense Board decided to post- pone the opening of the season due to the drier weather condi- tions and heightened fi re danger still present in Lane County. “It has been a very dry sum- mer and the fi re dangers have not been reduced enough to open for fall burning yet,” said Lane Regional Air Protection Agency (LRAPA) spokesperson, Jo Niehaus. Outdoor burning, also known as open or backyard burning, allows some Lane County res- idents to burn dry woody yard debris that was generated on their own residential property. Recent rule changes in the last year include the prohibition of burning on properties less than two acres inside the Eugene Ur- ban Growth Boundary. LRAPA reminds residents that rules diff er throughout the county, with some cities ban- ning burning within city limits all together. Violation of out- door burning rules can result in stiff fi nes. Residents should call LRAPA’s outdoor burning advi- sory line at 541-726-3976 before burning to check eligibility. Due to the heavy wildfi re smoke intrusions this summer, LRAPA encourages residents to explore alternative options to burning. Residents can dis- pose of woody yard debris for a minimal charge at one of Lane County’s various collection de- pots. Chipping and composting are also alternative options to burning. For more information on open burning, visit www.lrapa.org or call LRAPA at 541-736-1056 or fi nd us on Facebook and Twit- ter @LaneRegionalAir. Dentistry is our profession, people are our focus.
