4A • COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL • AUGUST 15, 2018 The First Amendment O PINION Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridg- ing the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition their Government for a redress of greivences. Letters to the Editor Policy Th e Sentinel welcomes letters to the editor as part of a community discussion of issues on the local, state and national level. Emailed letters are preferred. Handwritten or typed letters must be signed. All letters need to include full name, address and phone number; only name and city will be printed. Letters should be limited to about 300 words. Letters are subject to editing for length, grammar and clarity. Publication of any letter is not guaranteed and depends on space available and the volume of letters received. Letters that are anonymous, libelous, argumentative, sarcastic or contain accusations that are unsourced or without documentation will not be published. Letters containing poetry or from outside Th e Sentinel readership area will only be published at the discretion of the editor. Political/Election Letters: Election-related letters must address pertinent or timely issues of interest to our readers at-large. Letters must 1) Not be a part of letter-writing campaigns on behalf of (or by) candidates; 2) Ensure any information about a candidate is accurate, fair and not from second-hand knowledge or hearsay; and 3) explain the reasons to support candidates based on personal experience and perspective rather than partisanship and campaign-style rhetoric. Candidates themselves may not use the letters to the editor column to outline their views and platforms or to ask for votes; this constitutes paid political advertising. As with all letters and advertising content, the newspaper, at the sole discretion of the publisher, general manager and editor, reserves the right to reject any letter that doesn’t follow the above criteria. LETTERS Better served by creating our own opportunity [Regarding Ned Hick- son's editorial “We’ve Come a Long Way Since the Dixie Chicks — But In the Wrong Direction," July 25], he was correct about that but failed to mention how frighten- ingly far we have fallen as a country. Never before have we had “artists” and “comedi- ans” fi nding it humorous and apparently appropriate to openly depict our presi- dent beheaded... to wish his innocent children impris- oned... to openly portray his graceful intelligent wife as a common wh--e! Very sad that the pop- ulation of these United States cannot comprehend that there is more than one opinion of how we are best governed and that there are literally millions who kept their mouths shut and prayed for an election that they could change the tide with; those who think their children and grandchildren are better served by oppor- tunity to work and create their own future than to live off the dole! —Joy Straub Cottage Grove Educate yourself about danger of fracking to environment (Editor’s Note: Viewpoint submissions on this and other topics are always welcome as part of our goal to encourage commu- nity discussion and exchange of perspec- tives.) I love our beautiful state of Oregon; the high desert, the mountains and especially our incredible coastal lakes, rivers and beaches. Growing up in the ’50s and ’60s near Lake Erie in Ohio, I lived through two-headed fi sh in Lake Erie, the Cuyahoga River catching on fi re and the bright-red sunsets from the steel mill in the next city. All this was before the Clean Air Act (1970) and Clean Water Act (1972). Coming to Oregon in 1975 was the best move I have ever made. We truly have it all. Th e natural beauty of Oregon is beyond compare, which is why we all need to educate ourselves on the current threat to our rivers, streams, forests, wildlife, air quality and recre- ational access to our protected areas. Th e Jordan Cove Energy Project is a proposal to build a 229-mile fracked gas pipeline across South- western Oregon and a Liquifi ed Guest Viewpoint By Julia Tousley-Ritt Natural Gas (LNG) export terminal in Coos Bay. Th e Canadian company Pem- bina wants to build the 229-mile pipeline from Malin, Ore., to Coos Bay, crossing 400 rivers, streams and other waterways including the Rogue, Klamath, Coos and South Umpqua rivers. Th is is a project that has been de- nied twice over the last 13 years. But now, with loosened regu- lations and secrecy, this Canadian company is trying again. Th e Army Corps. of Engineers and the Ore- gon Deptartment of Environmental Quality (DEQ) are seeking public comments as they review two Clean Water Act permit applications for Jordan Cove. We each have a responsibility to educate ourselves about this project, which you can do on July 16, begin- ning at 5:30 p.m., in the Bromley Room of the Siuslaw Public Library Learn about the scientifi c facts related to fracked gas, pipeline leaks, dredging for 900-foot tankers coming into Coos Bay, and other conerns that we, as Oregonians, should under- stand. I urge anyone who values pro- tecting the things that make Oregon beautiful to learn about this project and, just as importantly, who stands to benefi t most from this project.
