COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL • JUNE 27, 2018 • 3 A High winds topple legendary Wedding Tree “It is near the tracks of the Old Slow and Easy, not far from a former Calapooya Indian campground. If you see a strangely shaped fi r tree, whose limbs dip to the ground and then rise skyward for form a sharp ‘V,’ you have seen the Indian Wedding Tree...” C/O COTTAGE GROVE PUBLIC WORKS The passage above, from an article written decades ago, describes a tree on the Row River Trail that served as the main character in local folklore and tradition. On Sunday, June 17, a windstorm knocked the tree down, ending a local legend. The Wedding Tree served as a landmark and the story goes that Native Americans split the tree prior to their marriage and believed that if the tree survived the damage, their marriage would last the duration of their lives.
