COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL MAY 30, 2018 A 9 from A1 TINY potential residents of Cottage Village would in- clude low-income individuals who earn less than 50 percent of the area’s median income and may include people who are current couch surfing, se- niors with fixed incomes, individuals who are cur- rently living in cars and single parents or veterans. Residents of the village will also take part in its governance, according to SquareOne and main- tain the property. They will also be required to perform at least 10 hours of volunteer work and at- tend a monthly meeting with fellow residents. All residents will undergo a background check; must provide proof they are able to make monthly pay- ments and two references. While no structure in the village is planned to be larger than 300 square feet, there will be differ- ent models incorporated into the community. “Each unit has its own bathroom and shower, and small kitchen. The size of these homes make them very energy efficient. The village will also in- clude a community center complete with a gather- ing space, commercial kitchen, library, workshop space and more,” a statement from Cottage Village Coalition read. The property currently has an ex- isting house that was refurbished by SqaureOne and, according to Kelsh, currently houses a family who had been living separately because the cost of rent in Cottage Grove was too high. “The tiny houses proposed for Cottage Village are part of a larger national movement to create ef- ficient, low-cost housing for low income residents squeezed by high rents and low availability of rent- al units,” Cottage Village Coalition wrote, “espe- cially in rural communities like Cottage Grove.” TINY HOME—An interior view of a possible Cottage Village home COURTESY SQUAREONE VILLAGES Garden Club to offer presentation on constructing, caring for water gardens Worship Directory DRAIN: HOPE U.M.C. 131 W “A” St. Drain, OR 541-315-1617 Pastor: Lura Kidner-Miesen Fellowship & Song: 11:30am Potluck Lunch: 12:00pm Worship: 12:30pm Delight Valley Church of Christ 33087 Saginaw Rd. And the best part is that it can’t be overwatered. Plus, water gardens do not need weeding and, with the right balance of plants and water, they are relatively maintenance free. On Tuesday, June 5, the Cottage Grove Garden Club will welcome Faye Forhan, past president of the Oregon Koi and Water Garden So- ciety, and owner of two koi ponds along with several wa- ter gardens. In addition, Forhan is also a member of the Garden Club. She will demonstrate how to construct and care for a free-standing, pot-sized water garden, including: how to pick the right container, select a pump, and the types of plants that work in our climate. Forhan will also discuss potting material, dealing with mosquitoes and water garden ornaments. This program is good for people interested in water gar- dening but who don't know where to start, or those who already have a water garden Valdez to speak on 'Finding Home' at next CG Genealogical Society meeting The Cottage Grove Gene- alogical Society is present- ing Kathy Corey Valdez, who will speak at its program on Wednesday, June 13, in the Shepard Room beginning at 11 a.m. The title of her talk will be “Finding My Way Home — An Adventure to Ancestral Places in Ireland and England."
