10A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL MAY 2, 2018 Library hosts teen art show A piece of art work completed by Brenna Feigles, being considered during the library's teen art show this month. By Tailor Mehan CGHS Lions' Roar Staff Cottage Grove Library has an opportunity they started last year, allowing individuals be- tween the ages of 12 and 18 to submit their art and have a si- lent auction where people can bid on an art piece. Those at the show can also vote which art piece was their favorite and the winner gets a yet-to-be-revealed prize. Julie Jeanmard is the head of the youthservices for the li- brary and she is trying to reach out to the community to expand the youth program. The youth council helps put this show to- gether by selling the art to help raise awareness of teen art in the community. Jeanmard says, “During the summer, the summer reading program kids go on multiple trips, so this kind of funding helps the youth services pro- gram gain money for them to open up for more options and for them to buy books more in the correlation of their age. The youth head advisors aren’t very persistent, sadly. We need more kids who will be here constantly supporting our group.” Jeanmard went on to say, "The community should be more supportive of our teen art. Teen art is very important, LORANE NEWS Submitted by Lil Thompson Lorane Grange enjoyed a good attendance of 25 for des- sert and bingo. No one won the progressive blackout but all had a great time. That is why we put this on, we did it in previous years, but we just gave their art away and the youth council thought it’d be a great idea to begin to sell their art. This is our second year doing the art silent auction, hopefully it turns out successful." Brenna Feigles submitted two art pieces into this year’s art show. She is a senior at Cottage Grove High school (CGHS) and one of her pieces was half Afri- can American, half lion. “I drew this because there’s so much controversy these days," Feigles said. "I drew it half lion because a lion is known to have so much pride within themselves, like we should have within ourselves, it doesn’t mat- ter what you look like or the race you are, we should all have pride within ourselves.” As for the art show, people may come and vote everyday for their favorite piece, until May 24. The ceremony night, which includes the end of the bids, and the announcement of who earned the most votes begins a 4:30 p.m. at the library. The bids will be updated everyday. Most art products in the silent auc- tion will be starting at $2 and if someone bids the same, or high- er they will continually go up in prices until voting ends. And in keeping with tradition, the BMD board has decided on a theme for this year's festival: Every trail tells a tale. BMD board member Cindy Weeldreyer said the theme will be in- corporated into this year's Bohemia Nugget--a publication detailing the festival and its schedule--as it is every year. Weeldreyer will be responsible for penning the feature article based on the theme. "Cottage Grove has a neat history," Weelderyer said. She plans on exploring the history behind the "trails" around town including Row River Rd. and Mosbey Creek Rd. The piece will be accompanied by art work created for the festi- val that features horse drawn buggies and local landscapes. "We're really excited about it," Weeldreyer said. While the festival always has a theme, it has seen some changes this year. In February of this year, the BMD board announced that it would be cutting a day from the schedule. “For the fi rst time in its 58-year history, Cottage Grove’s Bohe- mia Mining Festival will end on Saturday night and not Sunday afternoon,” a press release read. “BMD is all about tradition,” said board president Cathy Sim- mons. “Yet as we go forward, circumstances force us to make changes like this one with an eye on our bottom line.” Simmons previously noted that it cost approximately $50,000 to host BMD each year. Last month, the board approved its 2018 budget of $55,450. The board noted that Sunday was traditionally the slowest day for the festival and may have seen fewer attendees this year due to Rainier Amusements, the third-party operator that contracts with BMD to provide the carnival, tearing down rides on Sunday instead of Monday this year. The change from four to three days was also attributed to volun- teer schedules with Simmons citing the small band of workers re- sponsible for erecting and tearing down the elaborate props and set- tings used during the festival. “Most of our board members, spouses and festival volunteers take a week of vacation time to produce the festival and need to return to work on Monday,” she said. Bohemia Mining Days is scheduled for July 19 through the 21.
