8A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL APRIL 25, 2018 School board interviews superintendent candidates Board also chooses firm to help in longterm search By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com At Monday’s South Lane School District board meeting, the board narrowed their interim su- perintendent search to two fi nal candidates. During an executive session that lasted over three and a half hours, the board interviewed candidates and discussed their qualifi cations. In the public session, the board then discussed questions to ask the fi nal candidates’ references. These questions included how they handle “pressure situations” and if former employers would hire the candidate again or not. The interim candidate will be selected at the April 30 meeting in executive session and once a contract agreement has been reached, the board will announce the interim superintendent on May 7 during a regularly scheduled meeting. The board is looking for “a candidate who understands the importance of what we’ve already accomplished in our district and where we’re heading,” said board chair Alan Baas on Monday night. “And how important it is that we stay in touch with our staff and our town.” The interim superintendent will be fi lling the vacancy left by superintendent Krista Parent who will be retiring from the district in June after several months of media reports about her personal life and a complaint fi led by a local resident concerning the matter. The current acting superinten- dent, Kyle Tucker, did not apply for the interim position. During a previous school board meeting, the board agreed to utilize a suggestion from Steve Kelley of the Oregon School Boards Association and include district staff in the interview process. In open session, the board then discussed, but did not make any fi nal decisions, on what to include in contract negotiations in terms of sick leave, vacation days and use of a district car. The salary for the interim position will be approximately $130,000. “I think this will be a good exercise for next year,” said board member Sherry Duerst-Higgins during the meeting in reference to the process the board will go through to determine a long-term superintendent. In getting ready for the long-term superintendent search, the board approved and unanimously agreed on the hiring of Kelley, who will be partnering up with Greg McKenzie, an executive search consultant for Window to Leadership. Kelley has been leading the board’s interim search process. “Thank you very much. I really was hoping we would move in this direction, I’ve loved work- ing with you,” said Kelley after the vote. “Do you have your challenges? Absolutely. But I want to help you with that.” McKenzie drove down from Portland for the meeting but after not being able to get into the locked district building as the board met in executive session, he drove back home. Prior to Monday's meeting, the board invited the public to weigh-in on the process of hiring both the interim and long-term superintendent. Residents were given the opportunity to comment on the qualities and qualifi cations they thought were important to include in the job listing for the positions and were guided through the process by Kelley during an open meeting last month. The board has previously stated that it plans to have an interim until June of 2019 and install a long-term superintendent at that time. •CORRECTION• In the April 18 edition of The Sentinel, an article titled, "Anti-hate-posters pop up in Main St. businesses," Alex Affi nito was identifi ed as the owner of Backstage Bakery. Lane County Voiture 80 for the Forty & Eight (veterans' group) has valued and enjoyed our rela- tionship with The Family Relief Nursery since 2015 when we were encouraged by then Cottage Grove Mayor Tom Monroe and Chamber of Commerce Manager Palmer Travis to consider The Family Relief Nursery to be our charitable recipient as our Child Welfare program. Our time with Diane & Courtney again confi rmed that “Business is Personality” and Courtney is go- ing to be able to continue building and developing service and assistance to the families and children of Southern Lane County and Northern Douglas County just as successfully as The Family Relief Nursery has under Diane’s leadership. Since 2015 close to $5,000 has been contributed to the Family Relief Nursery by members of Lane County Voiture 80, along with fi nancial support from Oregon members of both the Forty & Eight and the ladies who make up the Societe de La Femmes women’s auxiliary.
