What the University of Ore- gon is promoting as the “fi nest track and fi eld facility in the world” will undoubtedly be a great space. There is no ques- tion about the quality of what is being built. It will be an ex- cellent track, with great locker rooms and the best resources around. It will, for some rea- son, have a tower overlooking everything because, you know, why not? But in all of the glitz and glam of this track, that will be full of symbols that are there to supposedly represent the simple roots of what has come before it, the heart of track and fi eld in The design of the new Hayward Field, set to open in 2020, was revealed last week. Eugene will be missing. Track was perfect at Hay- ward because it was ours; it was simple. It was a space that was warm, comforting and fi lled with memories. Melissa Beckwith, a 50 year-old oncologist that lives in Eugene, was critically injured after the unusually high winds blew a tree onto the Row River Trail and struck her. According to a page on gogetfunding.com, the details of the race are hazy. “She remembers she made it 10 miles during a storm with high winds. She doesn't remember what happened next,” the post begins. The post goes on to inform that Beckwith suffered a fractured skull and neck and had “se- vere bleeding and swelling of her brain.” An emergency craniotomy stopped the bleeding and saved her life. Her page notes that she was able to return home over the weekend and is currently undergoing rehab. As of this print, $13,785 dollars have been raised for medical costs for Beckwith.
