6A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL MARCH 28, 2018 Happy birthday Sassy The Humane Society of Cot- tage Grove's (HSCG) thrift store has one treasure that is not for sale! Luckily, 10-year-old Hima- layan Sassy's story is a 'long tail' errr tale with a happy ending. Four years ago, her pet parents were leaving for work overseas and panicked about who would care for her until their return. They approached the HSCG and were given the paws up to "loan" Sassy to them. "When Sassy arrived, she dipped into a deep depression," said This 'n' That Corner shop manager Bev. "At fi rst, upon noticing the steady stream of incoming rescued, homeless, and injured cats and kittens, she was not very nice to them. She'd purr-puss-ly walk over to their cage, inspect them, and hiss and growl. But time has changed all that! Today, when she hears the in- coming pitter-patter of little fur- ry paws, she is their welcoming committee. She reassures them that they are in a safe place by walking over and quietly mew- ing, 'Welcome'. From the very start of her "loan" Sassy ruled the staff with velvet paws from atop her of- fi ce's scratching post. When her pet parents returned to the USA, they realized that it was best to leave her in control of the shop! Besides, her huge customer fan base would miss her too. Sassy is friendly with every- one. One of 'her' favorites is a man who drives 25 miles each week accompanying his wife while she shops for books. He claims that, "Sassy lowers my blood pressure." Other customers go out of their way to stop in at the shop for a chat-and-pat with Sassy before carrying on to their post offi ce or grocery store errands. This special-fl uffy Himalayan cat has added life, love, smiles, compassion and beauty to the shop. Not all of Cottage Grove's 10,000 residents are neutering, spaying or caring for their pets. These humans don't realize that our humane society is run by an all-volunteer staff who last year cared for 310 cats and kittens that went through foster care plus 15 dogs and 227 cats that were surrendered to the HSCG. Some felines stay at the shop for re-homing or are sent up to Greenhill Shelter. Foster par- ents take newborn kittens home for "every three hour" bottle feedings and raise them until they are eight weeks old before transporting to Greenhill Ani- mal Shelter. "Our shop supervisor, Sassy, has us wrapped around her fl uffy paws," said Janetta Overholser, president of The Humane So- ciety of Cottage Grove. "She will be 14 years old on March 30th. In lieu of presents for her- self she purr-furs food gifts for hungry cats and dogs. She of- ten sees homeless or fi nancially struggling people here asking for food for their pets." "Sassy also wants pet food donated for her scared and in- jured friends who don't have a home or who are not loved by anyone," said Bev. "Please make food or money donations to the HSCG to help my friends," confi rms Sassy. Her March 30-31 birthday celebration's gifts will paw-fi t animals in our community. Visit the birthday girl for a chat-and- pat and maybe you will fi nd a treasure to take home! Just not Sassy, she has im-paw-tant work to do!
