8A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL MARCH 14, 2018 Mediation program may be headed to Cottage Grove Fools Rush 5K set for 4/1 By Caitlyn May cmay@cgsentinel.com Judge Rick Brissenden had an idea. “The idea was mine that I came up with because we’re the justice court for all of Lane County but we’re situated out on the coast so I faced the issue of how to serve the whole coun- ty given the fact that we’re on the western edge,” he said. His solution? A mediation program in each community around the county that would be run by trained interns in spaces donated by cities like Cottage Grove. Lane County residents would be able to fi le cases remotely by utilizing an online form or email address and mediation staff would visit the communi- ties on a monthly schedule. If the parties failed to come to an agreement and a hearing had to be held, Brissenden would trav- el to the community to oversee the proceedings. “We want to determine the level of interest in those areas fi rst,” Brissenden said. Interns Enekole Atabo and Sarah Osborn visited the Cot- tage Grove City Council last month to inform the council of the possible program and submitted a letter detailing the plans to move forward. “Mediation is the process of bringing two disputing parties in front of a neutral third party who helps them facilitate a res- olution,” the letter read. “The process is transformative for the parties, as there is no winner or loser but only an aim to achieve a mutual agreement.” Possible cases for mediation would include landlord-tenant disputes or neighbor-to-neigh- bor disputes. “At this stage, we’re doing a needs assessment,” Brissenden said. “We’re in the early stag- es.” Picture the countryside of the far-southern Wil- lamette Valley spread out below beautiful Mt. David, located adjacent Cottage Grove’s histor- ic Northwest Neighborhood. Participants in the third-annual Fools Rush 5K Run/Walk on Sun- day, April 1 beginning at 5 p.m. will enjoy that very view, but only after a 400-foot hill climb that ensures they’ll earn it. Run CG, an organization dedicated to staging quality, unique running experiences in Cottage Grove, offers runners and walkers an exciting challenge, but one that offers a stellar reward even before the frothy beverage they’ll earn at the Brewstation after the race. The event, which will begin and end at Sixth and Washington Streets in downtown Cottage Grove, also raises funds for youth runners in Cottage Grove High School’s cross-country program. Run CG’s annual slate of events aims to promote fi tness in the area while showcasing the community for visitors as well as those who enjoy exploring their hometown on foot. As one of two evening runs on the Run CG cal- endar, the Fools Rush draws on the growing pop- ularity of races and running groups that take place after-hours; the popular Gold Rush 5K also draws a crowd of participants on the third Friday each July and begins at 9 p.m. Run CG contributes all of its proceeds after expenses to local youth run- ners, which has funded athletic scholarships, the purchase of running shoes and other essentials. More information and registration for the Fools Rush 5K can be found at runcgrun.com. •CORRECTION• In the March 7 edition of The Sentinel, the article titled, "Guns and our schools" referred to AL- ICE Training as standing for Alert, Locate, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. The acronym should have read, Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. Part II of the series will hit stands later this month. Break-in at Banner Bank Worship Directory Cottage Grove Police say there is no threat to the commu- nity after two juveniles broke into Banner Bank on Gateway Blvd. last Tuesday night. The boys, who authorities did not identify due to their age, reportedly broke a window to enter the building around 8 p.m. Offi cers, already in the area, responded to the scene and wit- nessed the two teens inside the bank. “The juveniles complied with the offi cers’ orders to exit the bank and were taken into cus- tody without further incident,” a statement on the incident read. Cottage Grove Police Chief Scott Shepherd reported that the teens caused approximately $1,500 in damage but did not steal anything. They have been charged with burglary and criminal mischief. Superintendent media reports indicated she may have written an anonymous letter given to the board in Au- gust. The letter came after ac- cusations surfaced concerning Parent’s personal life and a sub- sequent investigation found she had not violated district policy or state law. The school board announced Parent’s retirement on Jan. 16. Since the announcement, the board has focused on what it describes as “healing” and put on Thursday’s meeting—which board chair Alan Baas described as ‘historic’ and requested that it be videotaped--as part of the process. “They were adamant about this (community involvement),” said Steve Kelley of the Ore- gon School Board Association who ran the meeting and will be spearheading the interim su- perintendent search. The school board must go out to bid for a company to head the long-term superintendent search. The qualifi cations and qual- ities are part of the process in searching for an interim su- perintendent and are currently available on the school district’s website for public review. After receiving public com- ment on the qualifi cations and qualities, the board adopted a calendar that will see it screen applicants’ paperwork on April 2 in executive session, interview candidates in executive session on April 23 and approve the in- terim superintendent selection in an open meeting on April 30.
