COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL JANUARY 31, 2018 9A MEASURE 101 PASSES By Caitlyn May cmay@cgsentinel.com A controversial measure that made up the entirety of the special Jan. 23 ballot passed, cementing a House Bill that places a provider tax on hospitals and insurance providers. Measure 101 passed with 67.12 percent of the vote in Lane Coun- ty and nearly 62 percent statewide. The passage of the bill will continue to implement a 0.7 percent tax on large hospitals and a 1.5 percent tax on some health insurance companies to continue to fund Medicaid. If the bill had failed, state offi cials warned that approximately 350,000 Oregonians would be at risk of losing their health coverage. Elected representatives weighed in on the vote shortly after re- sults came in. Senate President Peter Courtney released a statement saying, “Passage of Measure 101 ensures we’ll have the funding we need to provide basic healthcare for our people. It may be a win, but we aren’t out of the woods yet. Our budget focus must now shift to the February forecast and the effects federal tax changes will have on state revenue. The upcoming session is short. It moves fast. We have a lot of work to do.” House Speaker Tina Kotek also weighed in saying, “Oregonians were loud and clear tonight: Health care is a right that we will protect. By passing Measure 101, Oregon voters affi rmed that ev- eryone has a right to access affordable health care – regardless of where they live or where they work. Thank you, Oregon voters, for keeping the state moving forward.” Vision Keepers celebrate 10 years For Gloria Campuzano it started when she fi lled out a survey in The Sentinel asking what her vision, as a resident of Cottage Grove, was for the community. Now, almost 10 years later and nearly as many years on the Vision Keepers board, she is helping to organize an event to mark the organization's fi rst decade. The Vision Keepers is a com- mittee appointed by the city to maintain focus on the 2037 Vi- sion and Action Plan which de- tails projects and improvements city offi cials and residents are hoping for by the year 2037. "Some of the things that were on the list are off and things like the (effort to install a) carousel have come on," Campuzano said. To mark a decade of effort, the Vision Keepers is hosting a community conversation on Feb. 27 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Cottage Grove High School cafeteria. "Everyone is welcome," Campuzano said. "We will have delicious food and it's a nice conversation." The top 12 projects around the city, according to the grou, include establishing a youth center, cultivate more emer- gency preparedness and obtain funds for a new aquatic center. Cheryl Bord and her crew sew pillowcases for sick children at RiverBend Hospital. “It takes a tribe of Women to make all these pillowcases for the children," she said. "I want to thank each and every one of them. They all deserve this award and Weyerhaeuser for giving us a place to do this."
