COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL JANUARY 10, 2018 3B Yoncalla overpowered by Days Creek L IONS Continued from page B1 By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com It was a telling start when less than 10 seconds into Saturday’s game Yoncalla found them- selves down 4-0 to Days Creek. It was a sign of the things to come as the Eagles fell to ninth ranked Wolves at home 42-18. From the start it was Days Creek getting open lay-ups, generally off of turnovers, to create an insurmountable lead. Moriah Michaels led the team with 20 points and Carlie Doss- man added 17 for the road team. “We’re so young and so ex- cited in the fi rst two quarters we just forget what we’re do- ing,” said Yoncalla’s head coach Nick Edera about his six-person team. Down 27-9 at the half, the Ea- gles came out and continued to shoot. “We shoot open shots. I en- courage them, any open shot you get, we’re going to take them and we’re going to stick by that,” said Edera. “We shoot, roughly, proba- bly about ten percent and that’s probably really generous to be honest with you. We don’t shoot real well.” Shanausi Hardy led the team with 10 points. While the shots were not fall- ing, fewer second half turnovers resulted in a more controlled game. With a minute to go in the third quarter Yoncalla had held Days Creek to fi ve points while they had four. After a banked in three followed by a steal and a lay-up, the Wolves lead was up to 24. In the fourth quarter, each team scored four points. After the game, Edera com- plimented the team on their play late in the game. “We sat in a circle, I told them I love them and that effort they gave in the last fi ve minutes of the fourth quarter is the one we need to give every minute of the game,” he said. “They fi nally got fi red up when things didn’t go their way. They looked like a completely different team, and I told them, they want to act like that we can live with that team the rest of the year and be okay, they show that fi re every night.” Now 0-2 in league play, the road does not get easier for the Eagles as their next two games are against eleventh ranked Elkton and fi fth ranked North Douglas. Wickman soars, Eagles plummet Cottage Grove's Tara Child works past a Meg Schatz screen on Friday. By Zach Silva “We have, I think, a lot of different options besides our posts. I mean, we do have some quick guards to go with that so we can do a few different things and I just, I’m pleased the way we fought back but disappointed that we couldn’t fi nish the deal,” said Yoss. Child fi nished the game with 10 points for the Lions. On the ensuing inbound, Stayton went deep and looked to have an open lane for a lay-up but it was Child again coming up with a steal. The Lions couldn’t get a shot off and a kicked ball call gave the ball back to Stayton with 6.4 left on the clock. The Lions then fouled Genevieve Frith who went to the line to shoot two. Stayton put no one on the block to rebound the free throw so that they could set up their defense. Cottage Grove had two girls ready to get a rebound but after Frith missed a pair, she came up with her own rebound and was able to dribble out the clock and seal the win. “We just didn’t execute. I don’t know what else to say other than that. We just didn’t execute,” said Yoss on his team’s inabil- ity to get the last rebound. The Lions will now begin league play on Friday at home against Sisters (3-9). Caring for your Health zsilva@cgsentinel.com Doomed by shooting woes that included scoring just 10 points in the second half, Yon- calla fell to Days Creek on Sat- urday night at home despite the standout play of Ted Wickman. Wickman led the Eagles with 29 of the team’s 37 points and hit all but one fi eld goal, a fast- break lay-up, for the team. “I think the younger guys need to get used to playing back to back games on back to back nights. Early on we missed wide-open stuff that we would normally hit. That was really the difference,” said Yoncalla head coach Jarred Eakin. As Yoncalla missed shot af- ter shot at the rim, it was the Wolves hitting fi ve threes and taking over in the fi rst half. Get- ting their lead up to as much as eight, it was then Wickman who then mounted a charge of his own. After hitting back-to-back threes to cut the lead to one, he found a rhythm inside and was able to get to the line to put the team up at the break. After playing the entirety of the fi rst half, Wickman found himself in foul trouble in the third quarter that brought him to the bench for over four min- utes. Losing any sense of an offensive rhythm and without a looming shot blocker on de- fense, the Eagles fell behind. “Ted’s not always going to be there and these guys need to learn how to play without him,” said Eakin. After a three-point third quar- ter, Wickman hit a three-pointer to start the fourth for the Eagles to cut the defi cit to two but then Yoncalla's Ted Wickman gets fouled and hits a shot as he drifts behind the basketon Saturday night. the Wolves had a steady stream of free throws. Days Creek went 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the quarter and ended the game on a 13-3 run to fi nish off the Eagles. “I’m still really confi dent in them, we still got a lot of bas- ketball,” said Eakin.
