North Douglas stays close, Lowell wins back-and-forth game

Coming down to the fi nal sec-
onds of the game and featuring
three lead changes in the fi nal
minute and a half, it was the
Lowell boys’ basketball team
that was able to secure a 44-
43 victory at North Douglas on
Thursday night.
“That sucks,” said North
Douglas head coach Tyler Van-
cil.
“I’m proud of the guys for
fi ghting back.”
Trailing by four with under a
minute to go in the game, North
Douglas’ Caleb Parks got the
ball in the corner drove to the
lane, hit the acrobatic lay-up
and got fouled. After making
the free throw, the Warriors
were within one.

North Douglas fouled Low-
ell’s Zach Smith who missed
the front end of a one-and-one.
Parks drove the ball up court
and hit a lay-up to give North
Douglas a one point advantage
with just 10 seconds left in the
game.
On the ensuing inbound,
Parks was called for a reach-in
foul that sent Cole Staggs to the
line. Staggs hit a pair of what
turned out to be game-winning
free throws.
“We come down and you
know we had set up for Cal, be-
cause nobody’s stopping him,
he’s just going to drive right to
the hoop and I was like perfect,
but they fouled him and still had
a foul to give,” said Vancil.
After the foul, the Warriors
inbounded the ball again but
Staggs came up with the steal to
seal the victory for the Devils.
“The play we had set up to
run at the end, they fi gured out

the next time we came down, I
didn’t have something for them
to go into. We ran out of time
on the timeout. I attribute that to
fi rst year coaching and trying to
fi gure it out along the way,” said

The entire game had was a
back-and-forth affair. The War-
riors started the game on an 8-0
run that was promptly met with
an 11-0 Lowell scoring stretch.
A 20-point North Douglas
fourth quarter gave the team a
fi ve point lead heading into the
fi nal quarter of the game.
“Basketball is a game of runs
and unfortunately we made a lit-
tle run at the end, got the lead,
and went for a steal and got a
foul called and came down and
the kid hit two free throws with
nine seconds to go,” said Vancil.
Parks led North Douglas with
15 points and Jake Gerrard had
13.
