COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL NOVEMBER 29, 2017 3C Skillful Teacher training. November wrap-up London Dorena Each month for the next 5 months Dorena will be doing a focus page on one of our outstanding classrooms and teachers. This month’s focus is on Mrs. Kelsey Dimock’s Kindergarten/First grade class. Mrs. Dimock graduated from the University of Oregon and has been teaching for 6 years, the last 3 of which has been at Dorena. Pervious to teaching at Dorena, she taught in Phoenix, Arizona. Mrs. Dimock loves teaching at Dorena. She like to woods and the small school setting reminds her of her days at Coburg Elementary School. Mrs. Dimock loves to teach read- ing. She says, “It is always just as exciting for me as it is for my students to see them realize what they are able to do.” Mrs. Dimock’s class enjoys a personally decorated classroom. One wall has been painted with soft colors of the rainbow. Her class is engaging and fun to be in. Her 22 students enjoy challeng- ing math and reading with the enhancement of a SmartBoard and several iPads. Mrs. Dimock sets high standards for her students and they love her to pieces. Zeke says, “She teaches us new words”. “She jumped in a pile of leaves with us. It was funny”, says Mya and Malakai says, “She teaches us how to learn”. At Dorena we are thankful for having her on our staff. Don’t forget the Annual Holiday Bazaar at Cottage Grove High on Dec. 2 from 10-3. Monday raised helps support the fi ne arts at Dorena. The 50 minute program featured amazing dance and creativity that only highly trained and dedicated dancers can perform. London students represented our school proudly showing courteous and appreciative behavior. Our Fit-a-Thon fundraiser was moved to the fall this year, and it was another success raising just over $2000. Students bringing in at least $10 will be treated to a movie and popcorn, and the top three Fit-a-Thon’ers will join Mr. Bechen for a lunch at Jack Sprats. London’s enrollment continues to climb and is now at 101! Our 6th-8th and K/1st class- rooms are now at capacity. Lastly, London teachers will be getting together with teachers from Latham and Dorena four times this year to collaborate and support implementation of Ready Math, our newly adopted mathematics program. We will be focusing on the planning process, including Mastery Objectives, Criteria for Success, Assessment, and Lesson Alignment. We will also be supporting development of Student Discourse, a major component of the program. Latham October has been a busy month! We started our afterschool clubs (seasonal crafts and reading/homework club). Most of our classes were able to visit Ruby and Amber’s Farm where they were able to view plants, animals, pull farm equipment, taste fresh produce and sit on old wagons. We are continuing to improve our implementation of the Ready Math program this year. Latham, London, and Dorena will be meeting periodically throughout the year to discuss ways to improve math instruction and incorporate the components of the Over the past 3 years our Cross Country Program has grown by leaps and bounds under the direction of Athletic Director Mark Dreiling. After starting with just 12 kids, it grew to 29 kids, and this year to 37 kids. This is a sport that is accessible to all levels of athletes and inspires each member to simply “get better” each race. This year at the District Meet they all “got better”: the boys fi n- ished in fi rst place, the girls fi nished second, and the Co-Ed cham- pion went to LMS. It was an inspiring moment. Their team pride swelled as one student on the bus ride back home wrote the word “Champs” on the fog of the bus window. Instead of going to the state meet, this year the team decided to participate in a 5k road run in the community to emphasize their commitment to improve not only themselves, but also the community in which they live. Harrison One area that Harrison is prioritizing this year is off-campus learning experiences, i.e. fi eld trips. Our grade-level teaching teams are working to coordinate and organize learning experienc- es that inspire students and bring out their curiosity in the world around them. In just the fi rst couple months of school, every class has gone on at least one fi eld trip and many are on their second or third trip already. In taking advantage of the good weather, our initial highlights have been trips to a farm, the pumpkin patch, and (as pictured below), a hike on Brice Creek Trail. We appreciate the support from so many to help make these opportunities possible for our students - thank you!
