The truth is when we don’t have anyone but God to get us through something, He can use it to make us stronger in Him, and then He can use us to do greater things than we ever imagined we could do. God doesn’t want us to live weak, wimpy, helpless, pathet- ic, barely-get-by lives. That’s why He sent the Holy Spirit to be our “Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Coun- selor, Strengthener, Standby).” Acts 1:8 says, “But you will receive power and ability when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses [to tell people about Me] both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth.” The Holy Spirit is with you all the time, and His power gives you the ability to be a wit- ness for Christ. This means that in Christ, you have the power to be the kind of person in this world who represents Him as a light in a dark place…who has peace in the midst of the storm…who has the power not to worry when you have a huge problem, and hope even when it looks like there is no hope at all. I want to encourage you to take time to get to know God for yourself. Spend time with Him in prayer and through studying His Word. Wait on the Lord and receive the strength He has for you today (Isaiah 40:31). Put your focus on Him and pray, “God, I trust You. Please strengthen me today to do what- ever I need to do, through Christ. I give you my will and want to know what Your will is for me. I need Your strength, wisdom and guidance in every area of my life. I believe You will work out all things for my good (Romans 8:28). You are my strength and I won’t give up!” For more on this topic, or- der Joyce’s four-CD series The Holy Spirit. She was 95. Born on October 6, 1922, in Ayr, North Dakota, Lois was one of ten children of the late Emil and Linnie Nelson. After attending the State Teachers College in Mayville, North Dakota and the North Dakota School of Forestry in Bottineau, North Dakota, Lois was employed by the Boeing Aircraft Company and the Cessna Company as an airplane mechanic and became one of the famous “Rosie, the Riveters” of World War II. In 1945, she met the love of her life, David W. Sharkey, who was in the U. S. Navy at the time, and they married soon after. On April 23rd of this year, they celebrated their 71 st wedding anniversary. Lois and Dave lived for many years in California while both were employed by the U. S. Naval Weapons Station in Concord; and upon retirement in 1974, they moved to Walton, Oregon, eventually settling in Creswell in 1995. Lois was an avid reader and story-teller and loved tending to her garden, where there wasn’t a weed in sight. Hers was a life well lived and her legacy will be that of a dedicated wife and devoted mother and grandmother whose home was a welcoming place for all to gather. She was a devout Christian who set a fi ne example to those who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed by her two sons, David E. Sharkey (Carole) of El Dorado Hills, CA; and Paul D. Sharkey (Karen) of Creswell; and her fi ve grandchildren (John, Ryan, Brent, Emily and Daniel) and 14 great-grandchildren (Hunter, Wyatt, Colt, Remington, Austin, Dawson, Ashelyn, Ava, Emmett, Carson, Gretel, Laura, Ivan, and Nicolas). Services were held at Hillside Church, 635 Holbrook Lane, Creswell, on Saturday, November 25, at 5:30 p.m., with interment set for a later date at Roseburg National Cemetery, 913 NW Garden Valley Boulevard, Roseburg, OR. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Greg, her two step-children, Dave and Alisa, and her fi ve step-grandchildren. Judy was born in Worcester, Mass. on Dec. 3, 1945. Judy was a very caring person and enjoyed helping others as was shown in her chosen profession as a Registered Nurse. She loved to travel, garden and care for her pets as well as feed every animal that came into her yard. Judy was affectionately known as the "Carousel Lady" because 20 years ago she purchased a merry- go-round with the dream of getting it up and running in Cottage Grove for the enjoyment of the young and old. Although she never saw her dream come true, there is a group in Cottage Grove, Friends of the Cottage Grove Carousel, who are working hard to fulfi ll her dream. You might have seen Judy around town playing her 1928 Wurlitzer Military Band Organ or perhaps saw her in Bohemia Mining Days' and Creswell’s 4th of July parades. She enjoyed the music, but most of all loved to see others smiling and sway- ing to the beat. Judy was a very special per- son and will be greatly missed and loved.
