COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL NOVEMBER 22, 2017 9A Snapp House preserves local medical history By Cindy Weeldreyer For The Sentinel The familiar Queen Ann Vic- torian house at the confl uence of Silk Creek and the Coast Fork of the Willamette River is a mu- seum maintained by the Pros- pectors and Gold Diggers Club to showcase early medical prac- tices. It is Cottage Grove’s only Victorian-era house open to the public and next week it will be decorated in its holiday fi nery for the annual Dr. Snapp’s Holi- day Bazaar, Dec. 1-3. Built in 1886, by one of the town’s early doctors for his wife, it was originally located near the corner of South River Road and Main Street. In 1966, the Lane County Housing Au- thority purchased the property to construct Riverview Terrace, a senior housing complex. To make way for what was to be- come the tallest building in town, nicknamed the High Rise by locals, the shabby Victorian home was destined to become a “burn to learn” exercise for the fi re department. Local historian and business leader Ray Nelson persuaded club members to purchase the house from Lane County for $1 and then raised the funds to re- locate it to a nearby city-owned property. The Dr. Snapp House was the fi rst and only phase of that effort and sits today on the north end of Prospector Park near the Swinging Bridge that connects Slabtown to Lemati. The booster club traces its origin to Oregon’s Centenni- al Celebration in 1959; when Grovers organized an elaborate observance of the town’s early history. Everyone had such a grand time a decision was made to create a community organi- zation devoted to preserving local history. This resulted in the establishment of the annual Bohemia Mining Days festival in mid-July. In 1964, the club began BMD’s legendary Min- ers’ Breakfast on The Moun- tain. The popular event attracts nearly 1,000 diners to Bohemia Saddle Park, 38 miles southeast of town in the Bohemia Mining District. Our Worship Directory is a weekly feature in the newspaper. If your congregation would like to be a part of this directory, please contact the Cottage Grove Sentinel @ 541-942-3325 In August, Cottage Grove High School Principal Mike In- gman started conversations with the Woodard Foundation about the Career Technical Education (CTE) Program. Last week, the school received a check for $45,000. “It was a dream more than anything else,” Ingman said of the award which came in the form of a top-off grant from the foundation. The school’s CTE instruc- tors came up with a wish list of things to stock the culinary, technology, drafting and woods programs that totaled $45,548. The hope was that some of the list would be funded. “The foundation came back and funded the whole kit and caboodle,” Ingman said. The CTE program is funded in part by Measure 98 and al- lows students the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and earn hands-on experienc- es in technical fi elds through community partnerships and instruction. Earlier this year, there was uncertainty surround- ing funding sources after the state legislature bypassed bud- get deadlines in construction an education budget for the state. The package that passed was touted as the highest in recent history at $8.2 billion including Measure 98 funds for the South Lane School District. “We’re just really honored that the foundation sees the val- ue in our CTE departments and they’d be willing to fund that,” Ingman said. “We’ll be buying equipment that, there’s no other way we’d be able to.” On the list? A new motor for the jet milling machine for the drafting classes as well as a la- ser engraver and new electrical outlet installations. A new front load washer and dryer for the culinary classes as well as a microwave and pots and pans. The woods department will be welcoming two saw stops at an estimated value of $3,899 each and a 10” sliding miter saw. The school received a grant from an insurance company last year to pay for half the cost of the saw stop after it was noted the equipment potentially saved a student’s fi nger. Ingman expects purchases to begin around December 1. The sign-up period for Community Sharing's holiday boxes is now open. The boxes for Christmas will be dis- tributed on December 21. To sign-up, please visit Community Sharing at 1440 Birch Ave. before Novem- ber 22. Community Sharing is also selling buttons for $10 each to fund the holiday boxes. Please visit the Book Mine or Com- munity Sharing to purchase.
