COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL NOVEMBER 22, 2017 5A Cottage Grove Retrospective A look back at Sentinel stories from 30 and 60 years ago Millie Oberg prepared a vegetarian Thanksgiving Dinner in 1987. Millie Oberg can thank her mother for in- stilling vegetarianism into her lifestyle. Her mother raised chickens, and one of Millie’s chores was to hold the chicken while her mother sought the family din- ner. She would peer into the tiny eyes of the birds. “Then I was supposed to eat that chicken,” she said. Now, she can laugh about her deep love for animals but she still cringes at the sight of dead creatures. She can’t bear to watch fi shing on television, and when her friends POLICE BLOTTER return from hunting trips, they don’t tell her if they killed any animals. A retired school teacher, she studied the food cycle in her classes at the University of Or- egon in Eugene. As long as she could eat nutritious meals from the lower rungs of the food chain, she may as well do so, she decided. Yet her vegetarian diet didn’t emerge only out of her love for animals. She has never liked to eat meal, and the vegetarian diet is more healthful, she said. Her deceased husband, Stan- ton had been a physician in Cottage Grove for 31 years. One of his concerns was eating nutritiously, such as avoiding red meat which is high in cho- lesterol content. Her husband practiced healthful diet and the coronary heart attack which led to his death was likely a result of heredity, she said. Still, it’s been diffi cult to prepare vege- tarian foods, she said. “You have to work to make it palatable,” she said.
