COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL NOVEMBER 15, 2017 9A BOBO COMING TO TOWN Council talks zombies Axe and Fiddle welcomes back Fallen Stars By Caitlyn May cmay@cgsentinel.com By Caitlyn May cmay@cgsentinel.com Bobo and Tracy Byrnes have been married for over a decade and harmonizing a bit longer. This Monday, November 20, they'll bring their act to the Axe and Fiddle, a venue they've been to before and one they hope to make a regular stop on their tours. "It's just a great little room," Bobo said. "The people are su- per nice and sweet and they stop in and listen. We've been anxious to get back to Cottage Grove." The pair, collectively known as the Fallen Stars, specializes in Americana rock, blending rock and roll energy, coun- try-fl avored instrumentation and folk-inspired story-telling. The Fallen Stars have carved out a niche in the Southern Cal- ifornia scene all their own after moving to the area from Boston in 2000. Their fourth album, Heart Like Mine, features 16 tracks of "stellar country roots rock" ac- cording to Vintage Guitar Player Magazine. The album includes contributions from a handful of talented musicians, includ- ing Rami Jaffee (Foo Fighters, Wallfl owers) on Hammond B3, Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown) on violin and Danny Ott (Chris Gaffney, Dave Alvin) on guitar and lap steel. The album has garnered critical praise, includ- ing the Orange County Music Award for "Best Country/Amer- icana Band," and being named "Top Ten Indie/Unsigned Al- bum of the Year" by LA Music Examiner. Currently, the band is work- ing on a project for fans of the television show, Firefl y. " Our goal is to write a brand new original song based on each episode of the TV series Firefl y, plus the feature fi lm Serenity," Bobo said. The show Monday night is free of charge and begins at 8:30 p.m. "We love Cottage Grove. We like going and seeing the murals on the buildings and I think it's a place between Portland and San Fransisco that people forget about," Bobo said. "We would like to keep coming back." The second option would be to amend current city codes that allow property to be seized where prohibited conduct is tak- ing place. The third, and most promising according to the city, is to give a 60 day notice to all interested parties. After those 60 days, the city requests a circuit court to appoint a receiver. That party can than take control of the house. The issue is expected to come before the council if staff needs assistance in implementing any of the three options. Tourism group set to meet Cottage Grove First Impressions Program Plans for Enhanced Visitor Experience – Meeting on November 15. What do visitors to Cottage Grove think about our community? Are we rolling out the welcome mat to tourists, potential new residents, and pro- spective business owners? Can we make changes that will attract more visitors to stay longer in our area? How can we work together to enhance the “fi rst impressions” of our business districts, visi- tor services, and unique tourist attractions? The Cottage Grove First Impressions Pro- gram is a project of the Cottage Grove Cham- ber of Commerce, City of Cottage Grove, Main Street Program, and the Rural Economic Vitality team from Rural Development Initiatives (RDI). Support for the program also comes from Cycle Oregon and the Ford Family Foundation. This program launched in July 2017, with the goal to support enhancement of the city’s downtown business area and bicycle tourism. First Impressions partners two communities in the region, to provide volunteer teams to visit and provide an objective feedback. In August, a vis- iting team of volunteers from Oakridge conduct- ed a day-long “fi rst impressions” assessment in Cottage Grove, driving around the city, exploring on foot, and visiting businesses in and around the central business district, all with a focus on visi- tor-oriented stores and services, and amenities for bicycle tourism. The assessment team looked at local infra- structure and amenities, building exteriors, inte- riors, and customer service. The report generated from this visit will be presented for a communi- ty-wide discussion about how well local efforts are achieving their goals and where future proj- ects can be implemented to further support the vitality of our local businesses and community. A zombie house has been abandoned by its owner--usu- ally as a result of the housing crisis--and now sits empty or, in the case of a particular house discussed on Monday, has fallen subject to squatters. "Cottage Grove has one house, it may have more, but it has one house that is a prob- lem," City Manager Richard Meyers told the council. The city has turned off the water to the house but it is un- able to turn off the electricity. The city attorney presented three options to the council in- cluding having the city lease the house from the current owner-- who is out of the area and has ceased mortgage payments on the property. This option would allow the city to evict the oc- cupants through normal chan- Continued from A1 Old Time Gospel Fellowship 103 S. 5th St. • 541-942-4999 Pastor: Jim Edwards Sunday Service: 10:00am Join in Traditional Christian Worship Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Philip Benizi Catholic Churches 1025 N. 19th St. 541-942-3420 Father: Joseph Hung Nguyen Holy Mass: Tue-Thu: 8:30am; Sat:5:30pm Sun: 10:30am Confession: After daily mass, Sat. 4-5pm or by appointment St. Philip Benizi, Creswell 552 Holbrock Lane 541-895-8686, Sunday: 8:30am St. Andrews Episcopal Church 1301 W.
