COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL OCTOBER 25, 2017 11A Broken line Halloween activities Fire Levy Continued from A1 Continued from A1 causes damage one minute, 17 seconds. "Our ISO went from 5.9 to 2.4," Wooten said. "There are 1,600 fi re districts with that rating in the nation and we're one of them." ISO ratings help determine home insurance rates. The lower the ISO, the lower insurance rates. "We handled a record number of fi re calls last winter," Wooten said. "We had 22 calls in six weeks." He noted that the department is still limited in what it can do but that overtime has been reduced and full-time positions added. "In 2011, we handled a little over 2,000 calls with fi ve full-time positions. This year we ran 4,000 calls with not many more people with the funds from the levy," Wooten said. City staff and Wooten are prohibited from asking for a yes or no vote and city staff cannot prepare agenda items for election purpos- es. Fleck prepared an item giving the council's support of the levy. "I can tell you," councilor Garland Burback said, "We already voted yes at my house. We voted the day the ballot came." By Caitlyn May cmay@cgsentinel.com A waterline break on Sunday, October 22 caused damage to at least six residences, according to community planning and devel- opment manager Faye Stewart. The incident occured at approximately 10:45 a.m. when a 12" water main line broke at 14 St. and Quincy Ave. Crews were on sight and discovered a three-foot piece of broken pipe, 12" in di- ameter. "We installed 110" piece of pipe and fi lled the hole with gravel," Stewart said. "We had to dig out the broken pipe and replace it. It impacted several homes with water damage." According to Stewart, the water caused damage to the road as well. "The water actually lifted pieces of the street up so in the next couple of days we'll be cleaning up the residue and at some point, repaving a section of the road," he said. Stewart called the repair work extensive but noted crews had ser- vice restored by 9 p.m. Prior to the repair, residents noted lower water pressure in the area. A water line broke on Sunday, October 22 causing damage to the road at 14th St. and Quincy Ave. Several residents also saw their houses damaged during the approximately 12 hours it took to repair the break of the 12" pipe. Paving to repair the road will take place at a later date. Photo courtesy Katie Haynes.
