COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL SEPTEMBER 27, 2017 FIRE LEVY 11A Radios Continued from A1 Continued from A1 “When the levy was approved we made sure we had the staffi ng in place and then we started chip- ping away at those things suggested in the master plan,” Wooten said. In November, the levy will go back to voters to decide whether to renew it. “This is not a new tax,” Wooten said. “This is what we are already paying.” To encourage voters to pass the levy, South Lane County Fire and Rescue is embarking on a public education campaign by speaking to local service groups and residents about the benefi ts of the levy as well as the potential changes in ser- vices should the levy not pass in November. According to Wooten, up to nine fi refi ghter/ paramedic positions could be cut and staffi ng levels at the Cottage Grove and Creswell stations would be reduced from their current 24/7 levels. “It might mean we get out of the ambulance business,” Wooten added noting that the loss of the levy would also affect the ISO rating and sub- sequently, homeowners’ insurance rates. "The ISO would most likely return to the previ- ous rating," he said. “If we don’t get it in November, we would try for May,” Wooten said of a potential no vote on Measure 20-278. Currently, the district is in the last year of the levy. If voters turn down the renewal, Wooten said he has contingency funds to maintain service lev- els for approximately nine months but would look at making cuts to services shortly thereafter. “It would be a shame to lose all the good work and good things we’ve gained with this levy,” he said. with the proposed equipment from Motorola. However, several residents came out to speak on the issue and voiced their concerns re- garding the equipment switch. Duane Taddei expressed his concerns over the memo that states the new system would “allow for operations security and offi cer safety because those engaging in criminal activity will not be able to monitor po- lice offi cers’ activity and loca- tion.” “That’s not true,” Taddei told the council and cited examples of after-market gadgets that can decrypt and intercept police communication. Resident Dylan Mann also expressed concern over the technology. “We’re not in a position to be dealing with criminal master- minds or Bond villains,” coun- cilor Jake Boone said. “Some- one with SWAT gear can break into my house but that doesn’t mean I take the front door off the hinges. If someone drives a tank into town and shoots at po- lice, their vests won’t help but that doesn’t mean we throw the vests away or don’t get them,” he said. “It’s silly not to do this when we get a discount.” The radio system is quoted at $394,717. However, after discounts and an interstate co- operative procurement, the city would pay $267,074 creating a savings of $127,642. The agree- ment calls for payments made over fi ve years and according to Cottage Grove City Manag- er Richard Meyers, those funds would have to be budgeted for in the coming budget years. The council approved the re- quest unanimously.
