4B COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL September 20, 2017 Football Continued from B1 the Lions started to turn it on. They received the ball to start the half and marched down fi eld for a Bottorff score. To avoid Scappoose’s dangerous kick re- turner, the Lions elected to kick short which resulted in an Indi- ans fumble and a Cottage Grove possession. The Lions scored on a Giffen’s touchdown to put the Lions up 35-14. This was the start of Giffen’s busy third quarter. After scoring a touchdown, he blocked the Scappoose extra point on their next possession and then came up with interceptions on their next two drives to seal the Cot- tage Grove victory. While the air was fi lled with excitement after the game, se- nior offensive and defensive lineman Nate Farrell was ex- cited about the win but was looking forward to the start of league play. “It’s great but honestly we look at it like we’re 0-0 right now. We got a really big target on our back because we took league last… now we have the target on our back and we’re go- ing to carry it. We want to come out of league 5-0,” said Farrell. On Friday, the Lions will be travelling to Elmira where they will take on the 2-0 Falcons. In their fi rst two games Elmira out- scored their opponents 82-7. The meet, that is hosted annually by the Cottage Grove High School cross-country team, boasts a course that has a little of everything: a forest trail, a gravel path and a run up Dorena Dam. The varsity boys race started the day and Cottage Grove’s Konrad Raum was right in the front with the leaders from the get-go. The initial pack of 10 was whit- tled down as the course wound through the woods. The leaders continued to jockey for position through the course before the course brought the runners up the side of the dam in what is a brutal hill climb. Raum had separated from two runners from Philomath and was in a close race with Oakridge’s sophomore Isaac Whitney for fi rst. Whitney surged away on the hill and never looked back. Raum fi nished the race in second. “I wanted to place top fi ve so second is good for me,” said Raum who noted that this is a course where the goal is to fi nish well opposed to running a fast time. “It’s more [about] placement. You look where your pack is at and see who you’re with and then on that last mile you try to do better than you think you can.“ Shortly after Raum, was Cottage Grove’s Jimmy Talley in seventh place and Paesen Timm in eleventh. Desptie the diffi cult course, Talley was pleased with his improvement from last year. High school sports roundup By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com Game Cancellations After a seemingly clear week, the smoke fi lled the air last weekend causing some high school sports cancel- lations. The Yoncalla foot- ball game last Friday against McKenzie was postponed to Monday the 19th and the cross-country meet they were going to be competing in was cancelled altogether. Elkton football’s game at Crow was also cancelled on Friday. Cottage Grove Volleyball (2-5) The team fi nished up the non-league portion of their schedule last Tuesday when they fell at home to Hidden Valley 1-3. They started league play against Sisters last Thurs- day and they lost in straight sets to the Outlaws on the road. Cottage Grove Girls Soccer (1-2-1) To end their non-league sched- ule, the girls rolled over Marsh- fi eld at home winning 5-0. In their fi rst league game of the season they tied with Sis- ters 1-1 on the road. Cottage Grove Boys Soccer (2-0-1) In addition to their win over Sisters last Thursday, the boys defeated Marshfi eld on the road 6-1. Kyle Conley and George Cervantes each had two goals. Elkton Volleyball (11-4) The Elks beat Yoncalla at home in straight sets on Tues- day and lost to Days Creek 2-3 on Thursday. On Saturday they travelled to the Reedsport Invi- tational where they beat Gold Beach and then fell to Reed- sport in the championship. North Douglas Football (2-1) Last Friday the team trav- elled to Crow where they won 48-20. The Warriors relied on their run game as they rushed for 443 yards on the day. Run- ning back Caleb Parks fi nished the game with 223 yards on 14 carries for three touchdowns. North Douglas Volleyball (15-4) The Warriors volleyball “I was pretty happy with my time,” said Talley. “I’m a sophomore this year and that was my PR from last year so that was pretty good.” Konnor Owens and Matteo Liserre rounded out the Lions top fi ve fi nishing in 40th and 44th respectively. As a team Cottage Grove fi nished in fourth behind Phi- lomath, Elmira – a fellow Sky-Em League team that they will race at districts – and Newport. Nine teams competed on the boys side. While the boys team used their top runners to place well the girls’ team depended on their runners fi nishing closer together. Cottage Grove’s Nadia Witt led the team fi nishing in 18th place. “Last year I did really good on this course so I kind of wanted to see what I could do this year and see if I could beat my PR,” said Witt who was 34 seconds faster than her time at this meet last season. “It was a strong [race]. The woods part of it was really secluded so it made me go faster.” After Witt came in, she was followed by teammates Leslie Chacon-Romero and Kenzie Parsons in 25th and 26th respectively. Savannah Davis and Jenn Simons in 33rd and 37th place were Cottage Grove’s other scorers. The team fi nished third – behind Philomath and Thurston – of the six teams that competed. Not one to worry about times at the beginning of the season, coach Jim Settelmey- er was happy with the effort he saw from his runners. “Early in the season it should be about pushing how you are feeling not about watching the clock… And at this time [it’s about] getting stronger as a runner and having that confi dence and celebrating. Everybody gets to celebrate because they made it up the dam,” he said. Settelmeyer noted that because of the smoke that blew into the area on Friday, it was unclear if the meet would still happen on Saturday. Regardless if they were going to be racing or not, he still planned to be out on the course with his team and he knew that they would have some company. “I phoned the furthest away coach and had a talk and he said ‘Man, we’re gonna come. Maybe when we get there we got to walk around the park with you guys and you know eat some cookies or something.’” team has now rattled off six wins in a row. Last Tuesday they edged out Days Creek 3-2 and beat Umpqua Valley Christian/Melrose Christian in straight sets. At a tournament last weekend they defeated Perrydale and Trinity Lutheran 3-1 and 3-0 respectively. Yoncalla Volleyball (2-5) Last week the Eagles fell to Elkton 0-3 on the road and then defeated Glendale at home 3-0. The win over Glen- dale snapped their fi ve game losing streak. Yoncalla Boys Basketball Last week Yoncalla’s boys basketball coach, Bid Van Loon, stepped down after a recruiting violation that broke the OSAA’s undue infl uence rule. The News Review report- ed that the coach had given a ride to a North Douglas High School student and that he had given the student-athlete trans- fer paperwork. “I can’t exactly comment on a lot of that,” said Yoncalla athletic director Alex Kilmer of the situation. “I can tell you that we opened up the position and we are taking applications for the next couple weeks and will hopefully have a hire made by mid-October.” MORE HD CHANNELS, FASTER INTERNET AND UNLIMITED VOICE. • Speeds up to 60Mbps • Unlimited data – no data caps SPECTRUM INTERNET™ AS LOW AS 29 99 $ /per mo. for 12 mos when bundled* Blazing fast Internet is available and can be yours with Spectrum Internet™ With speeds starting at 60 Mbps 125+ CHANNELS SPECTRUM TRIPLE PLAY TM TV, INTERNET AND VOICE UP TO 60MBPS UNLIMITED CALLING $ from 89 97 /mo each for 12 mos when bundled* CONTACT YOUR LOCAL AUTHORIZED RETAILER 855-613-2321 *Bundle price for TV Select, Internet and Voice is $89.97/mo. for year 1; standard rates apply after year 1.
