4B COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL September 13, 2017 High School sports roundup A look back at the busy week in sports By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com Air Quality: A week of smoke fi lled air from the wild fi res around the state impacted teams in each sport. Cottage Grove boys soccer had a game cancelled and the cross-country team saw a meet in Sisters cancelled as well, while the rest of the teams had to alter their practice schedules. With the cancellation of their game last Tuesday, this was the third time the boys soccer team has had a game or jamboree cancelled this season. Head coach Vern Stewart noted that in all his time coaching he had never had one game cancelled for smoke let alone three different contests. Stewart also said that the poor air quali- ty has limited practices as well especially since fi ve of his players have asthma. The girls soccer team was able to play one game last week and they fell 0-2 on the road at Astoria. Cottage Grove Waterpolo: Last Tuesday at home the girls defeat- ed Sheldon 13-7 behind 12 goals from MJ Raade and Mikayla Baird. Head coach Ty- son Pilling was excited about how the girls started the season. “I thought they did a great job. I thought that they did a great job on their fast breaks, they did a really good job on their commu- nication. We had some fi rst season players playing and they scored a lot of our goals and it was their fi rst season ever playing,” said Pilling. Last Tuesday the boys waterpolo team fell at home to Sheldon 9-12. The Irish went up 7-1 to start the game but the Lions late comeback fell short. Ian Dukes ended the game with seven goals. “There is a lot of stuff that we need to work on with the boys,” said Pilling. While critical of their performance, Pill- ing was pleased with how the boys were able to manage the clock and focus on de- fense. “We were doing a good job at dump- ing the ball. We had one play where the shot clock is about to run out and instead of thinking, ‘Oh am I gonna get that last shot off,’ well if you think defense fi rst and throw the ball in the far corner of the pool, it allows your team to come back on defense.. When you don’t have enough players it al- lows you to set up and get back on defense,” Pilling added. Last Thursday the team played a coed game against Marist that saw the Lions win 14-11. Dukes ended the game with eight goals. last week. The Lions defeated North Valley and South Umpqua in straight sets to im- prove their record to 2-2. The team then fell to Salem Academy on Saturday. North Douglas Football: The Warriors lost to Camas Valley Sat- urday by a score of 24-44. North Dogulas fought on the road but failed to score on three separate trips to the red zone. Quar- terback Brandon Rundell fi nished the game 15-of-24 passing for 188 yards and three touchdowns. North Douglas Volleyball: The team continued their success their success this week as they went 4-1. In league play they beat New Hope Christian and Glendale in straight sets; in their fi rst three league matches they have not dropped a game. On Saturday the team went to the Reedsport Invitational where they lost to Weston-McEwen but defeated Crow and St. Paul. Elkton Football: The Elks travelled to Mapleton Friday night where they cruised to a 40-12 victory. They are now 2-0 on the season. Elkton Volleyball: Last week the Elks went 6-1 in their games.
