CGSENTINEL.COM Won't you be my neighbor? Cottage Village says hello Hot one Temperatures expected to hit 108, Concerts in the Park canceled By Caitlyn May cmay@cgsentinel.com The Cottage Village Coalition hosted an open house event for residents of the community to explore the property on E. Madison Ave. designated for the group's "tiny home" neighborhood dubbed Cottage Village. The aim of the project is to combat the lack of affordable hous- ing in Cottage Grove. Cottage Village Coalition has partnered with SquareOne, based in Eugene, to take advantage of the organiza- tion's non-profi t status. Earlier this year, SqaureOne purchased the land on Madison, courtesy of a Meyer Memorial Trust grant and is currently utilizing Cottage Village Coalition to fundraise the remaining amount need- ed to construct the village: $800,000. The event held on Saturday, July 30 was billed as a "get to know you" style BBQ that would allow residents to tour the property, seen to the left, and get an idea of what houses may look like once completed, see the photo above. The event also served as an opportunity for the group to begin fundraising efforts. According to the terms of the grant, construc- tion on Cottage Village must be completed by the summer of 2018. The area is expected to break long-standing records in regards to local temperatures dating as far back as 1939. Wednesday's high is forecast- ed to reach 108 degrees, shat- tering the record for the day of 99 degrees in 1939. Thursday is set to see 106 degrees before it cools off to a balmy 101 degrees on Friday. Temperatures are ex- pected to fall into the 90s for the rest of the week. "Cottage Grove is a tricky spot," said Gerald Mackey of the National Weather Service's Portland offi ce. "There's no air- port readings from that area so the closest place to check for records is Eugene." Eugene's projected highs for Please see HEAT WAVE PG. A6&7 Minimum wage hike hits CG By Caitlyn May cmay@cgsentinel.com On July 1 workers in Cottage Grove got a raise. The hike in pay, while possi- bly coinciding with a job well done, was actually courtesy of the Oregon State Legislature which increased the minimum wage for the totality of Oregon ranging from $9.75 an hour to $11.25 an hour. In Cottage Grove, the rate landed at $10.25 an hour. "We had upset business- es when it fi rst passed," said Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Travis Palmer. "I haven't heard any detailed conversations yet but in passing I have heard that businesses are already raising prices." Palmer cited the possibili- ty of a local business raising a weekly ice cream treat from $1 to $1.50. However, employees noted that Umpqua had raised its prices and may be behind the hike, rather than the increase in minimum wage. "I think there’s a lot of mis- conception about the minimum wage hike," said Cameron Re- iten, chairman for the chamber's legislative affairs committee. "The proponents are saying it’s going to lift people out of pov- erty…but the problem is, I’m seeing this fi rst hand as I go out Please see MINIMUM WAGE PG A11 SPORTS Summer Fun Biking comes to town The library keeps kids busy this summer.
