COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL JULY 12, 2017 11A City increases fees for armory, community center The city of Cottage Grove has increased cmay@cgsentinel.com the fees associated with armory and communi- ty center, Cottage Grove City Manager Richard Meyers announced during the Monday, July 10 city council meeting. The comprehensive fee schedule for the city has been updated to refl ect changes in fees that are three times higher than previous charges. To use the armory for a gathering prior to the change, By Caitlyn May residents paid $10 per hour or $100 per day. "This is still signifi cantly cheaper than other places," Meyers told the council. "We have costs to keep up on and we are renovating that build- ing." Meyers also noted that the new armory prices fall more in line with the charges for the city's community center. "We didn't want to be charging so much more for using the community center than the armory," Meyers said. Councilor Mike Fleck noted that he wrestled with the decision to support the agenda item not- ing that non-profi ts and charity organizations rou- tinely use the facilities and might not be able to afford the new fees. However, Meyers noted that the city often co-sponsored the events hosted by non-profi ts and charities. Current fees for the armory will now be $25 an hour for regularly scheduled meetings, civic groups, youth and senior organizations. A fee of $30 will be charged to special events such as wed- dings, a fee of $40 for local commercial use and $45 for local non-commercial users utilizing the drill hall. The armory is scheduled to continue renovation this year with the stairs next on the list of repairs at a cost of approximately $30,000 after lead tests revealed them as the likely culprit of dragging lead into the building. For a complete list of the new comprehensive fee schedule, please contact city hall at (541) 942- 5501. Council debates presentation time limits By Caitlyn May cmay@cgsentinel.com "We won't name any council- ors but there was a discussion on presentation lengths," Cot- tage Grove City Manager Rich- ard Meyers said in opening an agenda item during the July 10 city council meeting. His dec- laration was met with laughter and sideways glances to coun- cilman Garland Burback. Burback raised issue with presentation before the coun- cil during a previous meeting where he noted that speakers of- ten continue with their presen- tations well beyond the span of his attention. During Monday's meeting, Meyers gave the council sever- al options, informing the board that it had the authority to tell speakers at any time to wrap-up their presentations. He informed the board that the city could set a hard 15 min- ute time limit on speakers. The suggestion drew support from every member of the board. "I didn't realize the mayor had the authority to say any- thing," Burback said, noting a particular presentation that had spanned nearly 40 minutes. "There will be times," Mey- ers warned, "That a presentation will go longer because of the nature of the presentation." "Emphasize that we're dys- functional in the way we like to get out of here," Burback said. "Some of the stuff is boring to me. I'd rather just get the packet and read it." Meyers suggested that the board hold to a 15 minute time limit and request that speakers who feel they need more time, notify the board before hand during the agenda construction phase. "It would be hard not to be rude when interrupting some- one," councilor Mike Fleck said of the suggestion that mayor Congratulations! g to our Employee Resident of the Month of the Month Mrs Betty Adkinson Justine Carte for the Month of June, 2017 1425 Daugherty Ave. • Cottage Grove • 541-942-0054 Come with us to Discover China! "I think if there's a time limit, it's easy to call a point of order," he said. Councilors Jake Boone and Ken Roberts agreed with the 15 minute time limit and opted to inform presenters who needed more time to note so when sub- mitting their agenda item.
