2B COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL JUNE 14, 2017 Four day wrap-up from NCAA Championships BY ZACH SILVA FOR THE SENTINEL EUGENE – The Oregon women’s track and fi eld team won the NCAA Track and Field championship last Saturday at Hayward Field which captured the sport’s elusive Triple Crown. The Triple Crown, consisting of winning the NCAA title in cross-country and both the in- door and outdoor track and fi eld championship all in the same academic year, had never been won by a women’s team. “We’re really trying to make a name for our- selves and put ourselves out there as the women of Oregon,” said senior standout Raevyn Rogers. “That’s really what we wanted to do. We were Crown able to make history and it feels really good to be the fi rst [to win the Triple Crown]. The fi rst to ever do it.” Throughout the weekend, Rogers played a cru- cial role to the team. Not only did she win the 800 fi nal on Saturday, a race that she has the collegiate record in, but she was also the anchor leg of an airtight 4x400 relay. Going into the relay, the Ducks were losing to University of Georgia, who did not have a team in the race, by 8.2 points meaning the only way for the Ducks to win the team title was to win this race. “We can’t be second or we’re going to lose by .2 points and we have to win,” said Oregon’s coach Robert Johnson to the 4x400 team before the race. “And I hate to put this on you but I also want to put it on you because I wouldn’t want it to come down to any other group of four girls on our team.” The race was close throughout. Oregon was locked in a battle with University of Southern California and were trading off between fi rst and second. Rogers got the baton and was behind the Trojans until she took off with about 150 meters to go. Rogers was able to hold on to the lead and beat USC by two tenths of a second and helped set a new collegiate 4x400 record in the process. “I really had to stay calm and stay composed and really just run my race and focus on myself,” said Rogers. “My legs in the last 50 meters were all over the place but whatever I had to do, I had to get to the fi nish line.“ Coming into the fi nal day on Saturday, it looked like Oregon was going to follow the form chart and cruise to an easy victory as was projected. This was not the case. “The big shock and the big surprise where everything got tainted didn’t start until after the 200,” said Johnson. In the 200, Oregon’s Ariana Washington and Deajah Stevens were looking to fi nish fi rst and Please see WRAP-UP PG B3 Continued from B1 ers in the last 100 but Rogers was able to edge her out at the end and won the race by two tenths of a second in a time of 3:23.13, which is also a new collegiate record. “We’re really trying to make a name for ourselves and put ourselves out there as the women of Ore- gon,” said Rogers. “That’s really what we wanted to do. We were able to make history and it feels really good to be the fi rst [to win the Triple Crown]. The fi rst to ever do it.” And to win the title, it took a little bit of help from everyone. In addition to Rogers’ 800 victory, teammate Brooke Feldmeir, who was not projected to score in the event, ended up taking third. “I haven’t really slept the last two days. I’ve just been really excited because I knew there was more left,” said Feldmeier. Oregon also picked up points from Katie Rainsberger’s fourth place fi nish in the 1500, Sasha Wallace and Alaysha Johnson’s fourth and sixth place fi nishes in the 100 hurdles, Elexis Guster’s sixth place in the 400 and Samantha Nadel’s eight place fi nish in the 5000.
