COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL JUNE 7, 2017 7A LUTHERN CHURCH MARKS MILESTONE A s America’s post-war era be- gan, lifelong resident Irene For The Sentinel Schaffer fi rst attended Trinity Lutheran Church as a teenager in 1945 with her boyfriend and husband- to-be Bob Bauder. At that time the parish was called Trinity Lutheran Mission and sporadically shared the tiny Victorian-era Seventh-Day Adventist Church (now St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church) with several visiting pastors from Eugene and Roseburg. The Bauder Family played a key role in the young congregation’s installation of its fi rst full-time pastor, Rev. Richard E. Gross in Au- By Cindy Weeldreyer gust 1948. Church members purchased property at 675 S. 7th St. in 1949 and a ground breaking ceremony was held in 1950. On Trinity Sunday, May 20, 1951, the congregation dedicated its long-awaited church. Irene Bauder has made many memories among fellow Lutherans in the past seven decades. Without a Lutheran Church in Cottage Grove yet, she and Bob married on July 11, 1948, in the picturesque country church on the hill in nearby Walker, just north of town. As lifelong members of the church, they christened their four children and raised them as Lutherans. “We were all so excited to fi rst have our own permanent pastor and then a church of our own, as small as it was,” Bauder recalled. “The building had a large room that served as both the sanctuary and fellowship hall and a very tiny kitchen. Hosting weddings and funerals was a challenge that required moving folding chairs used in the ceremony to bring in a few tables for the reception. Yet, fi - nally having a building was a tremendous milestone in our church history.” Most signifi cant anniversaries are marked in 25-year increments. The Lutherans chose to celebrate their 70th anniversary in Cottage Grove because it coincided with the 500th Anniversary of the Prot- estant Reformation led by Martin Luther, which led to the establish- ment of the Lutheran denomination. “Holy Trinity Sunday is a unique observance because it doesn’t recognize an event but commemorates a doctrine of the nature of God,” Pastor Jim Markus noted. “It’s a signifi cant day for local Lu- therans as our parish takes its name from it.” Markus said their church is well-known in the community for Name change for Kennedy By Caitlyn May "Ken- n e d y H i g h School. I like the sound of that," South Lane School Board Pres- ident Sherry Duerst-Higgins said during the Monday, June 5 meeting of the board. The agenda called for the con- sideration of changing Al Ken- nedy Alternative High School's moniker. "The staff was hesitant when cmay@cgsentinel.com we approach them but 75 per- cent of the students said they'd like the 'alternative' removed," said current Kennedy prin- cipal Mike Ingman. Ingman will make the move to Cottage Grove High School for the 2017-2018 school year. "That's not to say that 25 percent of the students wanted to keep 'alternative.' They had other suggestions," he told the board. However, no other name changes were considered. The school, who serves stu- dents who better obtain their high school education in a different setting that Cottage Grove High School, will now offi cial be Al Kennedy High School." The school board was re- quired to vote on the change be- cause it mandates changes with the state. We’re at a crucial time in our ministry to be faithful to the Lord and to seek His blessings for an ongoing Lutheran presence in Cottage Grove.” This Sunday afternoon (6/11) at 3 pm church members celebrate the congregation’s 70th anniversary with a worship service fol- lowed by a banquet. All former members are invited to participate in the family reunion. Markus said, “The only two living pastors will be present: Pas- tors Roland Kroll (1966-74) and Gerald Rabe (1987-2002). The district president will preside and the former pastors will participate in the worship service.” There is much excitement among local Lutherans this week as they anticipate the upcoming celebration, especially Bauder. “Seeing the church grow and change through the years has been a wonderful journey for me,” Bauder said. “With today’s larger fa- cility we can better serve the needs of our community and we’re excited about what the future holds for us.” Both Markus and Bauder extend an invitation from the congrega- tion to anyone who’s had any connection to the church to join them for the celebration this Sunday afternoon. An RSVP to the church offi ce at 541-942-2373 is appreciated to prepare a banquet to serve all who attend.
