Latham news Afterschool Clubs Our afterschool clubs for the 2016-2017 year were a success! We had volunteers teach dra- ma, rag weaving, chess, Native American crafts, science, Chinese jumprope, woodwork, and gardening, just to name a few. If you would like to share an activity for our next year’s after- school clubs, please call us at Latham. We would love to have you! Latham Lap-a-thon On May 12, we enjoyed a morning on the track at Cottage Grove High School running to raise money to support Latham School. It was a rainy Friday, but, with the exception of a few sprinkles, the weather was perfect! At the end of the lap-a-thon, students, staff and volunteers were listening to “Here Comes the Sun”. What a great way to end the event! Thanks to all that participated or donated. Latham’s School Garden As we head toward the last few weeks of school, we are preparing our garden for the warm days ahead. Parent volunteers have faithfully redone the fence, prepared the beds, and facil- itated the planting of the new crops. Students have been able to help in the garden at recess, participate with their class, or join the Gardening afterschool club. Students love to get their hands dirty as they learn about the natural world around them. This is the third year that Latham students, community, and staff have participated in a Penny War to raise money to give to the Lion’s Pride Pageant which in turn donates it to the Children’s Miracle Network. The Children’s Miracle Network provides money for the Springfi eld River- bend Sacred Heart Hospital’s neonatal and pediatric units. The students listened to a presenta- tion in which the high school participants in the pageant explained what their “pennies” would be used for. The staff and students look forward to the Penny War each year; pennies are the positive points and silver/currency take away from the penny totals. Each year we have raised more money than the previous year. This year Latham raised $604.59. Students of the Month BOHEMIA ELEMENTARY DORENA ELEMENTARY Violet is kind and helpful to everyone! VIOLET GARCIA ASHTON EDDIE Ashton Eddie from Ms. Mun- son’s 4/5 class is Dorena’s student of the month for May. Recently Dorena went on a school wide fi eld trip to Get Air in Eugene. While they were gone Ms. Pabst got a letter from a family that was there the same day. Th e mother complimented the entire class but singled out Ashton for helping her younger daughter have a great time. Four times Ashton went back to check on the young girl to make sure she was OK and having fun. Ashton truly displayed what it means to be a Dorena Panther.
