6A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL MAY 10, 2017 SLSD releases 2017-2018 budget The South Lane School District has released its cmay@cgsentinel.com proposed budget for the 2017-2018 cycle. The district has warned residents for months that, due to legislative action on part of the budget, cuts would be coming down the line for South Lane. The Ways and Means Committee has allocated $7.8 billion to the state school fund. That number falls ap- proximately $600 million short of the current standard services level. To make up the difference, schools must cut services, days and staff. For South Lane School Dis- trict, the difference comes to approximately $1 to $1.8 million. The shortfall co- incides with several other factors around the district including an estimated larger By Caitlyn May Black Sox head to Drain Again On Saturday, May 13, the Drain Black Sox baseball team will be honored with a fi eld dedication at North Douglas High School at 1 p.m. The public is wel- come to attend. The semi-pro baseball team won the national title in 1958 and joined the Or- egon Sports Hall of Fame. Several team members will reportedly be present and the old uniforms will be out for show. The latest decreased budget is the latest in a string of shrinking budgets. The school has cut 41 days com- bined from previous years resulting in the district's eight-grade students having just two full school calen- der years in their South Lane experience. Previous cuts also means current options for budget saving measures are slim. South Lane will request up to four additional days cut to attempt to come into line with its new budget but that move will require approval. According to the proposed budget, the school dis- trict does not plan on laying personnel off but several vacancies will be left unfi lled and the district warns of larger class sizes and workloads for instructors. The full budget can be viewed on the SLSD website. After her husband of 26 years, Warren passed away, Martin traveled to Bangkok, Thailand to be near her sons. In all, Martin had fi ve children. "One has passed away," she said. "He was 75 years old when he died." Martin's work in Thailand lasted 18 months as she served the Secretary, Offi ce Manager for the Commanding Offi cer of the U.S. Army's 29th Signal Corps. It was during this time that her youngest daughter, Marianne, attended the International School in Bangkok. At the end of her 18 months, Martin moved back to California but her service wasn't done. According to Terry, Martin began helping refugees, displaced from the confl ict in Vietnam. "The United States agreed to take them into our country as refugees and immigrants. At that time, she asked for a tempo- rary duty transfer within the Social Security Administration to San Diego where she lived and helped register those desperate Cambodian refugees so they could enter into American society legally and live permanently" he said. Two days away from her 100th birthday, Martin remembers Thailand and she remembers working there but of her accom- plishments, she says, "I'm not bragging, it's just what happened." It's a quality she is apparently known for, "She's been helping other people for decades," Terry said, "She never asks for anything for herself."
