COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL FEBRUARY 8, 2017 3B B OYS ' WIN CONTINUED FROM PG 1B didn’t stop the onslaught of Cottage Grove, and the Lions put up another 24 points, in- creasing the lead. At 70-38, Cottage Grove was comfortable enough and Donn Pollard pulled most of his starters when the fourth quarter was underway. Cottage Grove was 35 of 58 (60 percent) from the fi eld and shot an impressive 50 percent (six-for-12) from beyond the arc. Elmira shot just 29 percent (18-for-61) and attempted 28 three-point shots (sinking only four). The Lions bench had a strong 17-point game, led by Jesse El- G IRLS ' lingworth with seven points. Blake Sentman led the team in scoring with 29 points and Hunter Gipson followed with 16 points; Kory Parent scored 11.. Sentman, Gipson and Parent combined for four steals, but it was Tucker Porter (eight points) who led the team in steals with three of his own. Gipson led the team in re- bounds with eight, followed by Dejean Alonzo (six points) with seven. Every player on the roster was rotated in at least once during the blowout win on Thursday, giving bench players and back- ups in-game varsity practice. Despite the win, the Li- ons (13-5, 5-1 Sky-Em) fi nd themselves in the middle of a three-way tie for the Sky-Em title. Sutherlin and Sisters both share a 5-1 record with Cottage Grove. The Lions’ road loss to Sutherlin put the league in this predicament. As Cottage Grove now reach- es the fi nal few games of the regular season, there won’t be much room for error if they wish to retain their Sky-Em crowns and receive a playoff berth and a chance at the state tournament yet again. Cottage Grove has a tough schedule this week, travelling to Sisters and Sweet Home, then hosting Sutherlin on a fi tting Valentine’s Day. Please see page 2B for game schedules. TRIUMPH CONTINUED FROM PG 1B he didn’t try to fi ght it. Weybright still had two more shots. The point guard made the second shot but missed the third, giving the Lions a 39- 37 with 0.5 seconds left in the game. Elmira couldn’t get a full-court shot off in time and the Lions won, putting them on a fi ve-game winning streak. “I was proud of our girls for sticking to the game plan by not fouling as much and keeping the Falcons off the foul line,” Yoss said. Elmira only hit six free throws compared to 17 the last time they played the Lions. “It’s great to see one of our seniors step up to the line to win the game for us,” Yoss added. The Lions were able to hit free throws down the stretch, sink- ing fi ve of their last seven, and Yoss says that one of the misses was intentional to take time off the clock. Weybright only had one shooting attempt prior to being fouled and her only points were from the free throws when the game was on the line. Reilly Kelty led the team with a whopping 19 points on the night, leading her team to an- other thrilling victory. “Every game at least one of our ‘triple towers’ has stepped up and had a great game,” Yoss said. The “triple towers” he is referring to are freshmen Ema Gardner, Kelty and junior Ke- ara Murphy, each stand at six- foot-1, six-foot-three and six- foot-two, respectively. Cottage Grove has now beat- en every team in the Sky-Em League at least once. Current- ly they rival Sutherlin for the league title (both at 5-1 in league play). This week the team plays two games on the road at Sisters and Sweet Home. Their next home game will be on Tuesday, Feb. 14 against Sutherlin at 5:45 p.m. Photo by Sam Wright Blake Sentman dishes the ball out to Kory Parent over his head for an easy bucket.
