COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL FEBRUARY 1, 2017 3B B ASKETBALL CONTINUED FROM PG 1B aged to put themselves in a better rhythm in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs kept responding and the Lions found themselves in a 27-17 defi cit at halftime. The third quarter gave the Li- ons hope as brought their score to within fi ve of the Bulldogs’ at 31-26. Blake Sentman and Kory Par- ent attempted to mount a come- back, but Sutherlin remained steadfast and outscore Cottage Grove by one point (12-11) in the fi nal quarter, and the Lions lost 43-37. The Lions were only fouled 10 times for the entire game, accounting for only nine free throws. Of those free those, Cottage Grove only sank four. The Lions shot 33 percent from the fi eld (14 of 42) and were also outrebounded 26-30. Sentman led the team in scor- ing and rebounds with 14 points and eight rebounds. Parent fol- lowed with 10 points. Sentman sank fi ve of his 13 attempts from the fi eld (two- of-six from beyond the arc) and shot only 50 percent from the line (two-of-four). The loss put the Sky-Em League up for grabs between the Outlaws, Bulldogs and Li- ons. The second round of league play is set to begin on Thursday for Cottage Grove. Redemption was found on Friday when the Lions hosted the Junction City Tigers and managed to hold off a scrappy team that was desperate for a league win. Those who left early would have been disappointed by missing a game that turned out to be much closer than the start of the game suggested. Due to a fl urry of steals and fast breaks, Cottage Grove found themselves up 21-4 at one point in the fi rst quarter, but Junction City wasn’t going to go away quietly. After a 26-13 fi rst quarter, the Tigers outscored the Lions 18-8 in the second quarter, closing the gap and giving them all the momentum with a half-court buzzer-beater to make it 34-31, Cottage Grove, at the start of the second half. The Tigers had crept their way back into the game and managed to stay in a threatening position throughout the third quarter. At one point, Junction City took a slight lead, but the Lions responded and regained the lead, though they still found themselves only ahead by three points going into the fourth. Sentman and Parent both rallied to stave off the a Tiger comeback, particularly with the help of Sentman’s free-throw shooting. The senior hit 10 out of his 10 free throws on the night, most of which came in the fourth quarter. Sentman was six-of-16 from the fi eld and walked away from the game leading in scoring yet again with 25 points. Parent, who scored 18 points, was more accurate from the fi eld. He was four-for-fi ve from the fi eld and three-for-four from beyond the three-point line. Par- ent also sank seven of his eight free throws. DeJean Alonzo led the team in rebounds with 10 and scored nine points of his own, and Hunter Gipson accounted for fi ve points. To the Lions disappointment, Sisters and Sutherlin both won their games on Friday as well, and the 4-1 three-way tie in the Sky-Em remained. The loss and the win from the Lions last week puts them in 12th place in the OSAA rank- ings, and Sutherlin has stayed in the top 10 at number nine. Cottage Grove will kick off their second round of league play against Elmira on Thurs- day.
